Hi guys,

I'm from Chicago, IL and finally found this board. I have been seeking information on hydrocele repair for quite sometime now, and was glad that I found this board.

I have a right hydrocele about the size of an orange, and have had it for a few years. I saw a urologist who wants to aspirate it and inject a substance to close it off (schlerosing agent. Have not had it done yet because I have seen other urologists who say that the injection is not a good idea, but that I should have the surgery.

Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

Hey Guest...what's the status of your hydrocele repair?  Did you get the injection or surgery?

I have had the aspiration done twice and it came back twice, the thing is they only take the fluid out ,the bag is still there. Mine was the size of a mango and I went for the operation. The operation is, needle, sleep and wake up twenty mins later.

No pain or any discomfort for the first few days and only the stitches causing a bit of a nuisance. Stitches disolve in just over a week, after 4 weeks you can hardly see the place where it was cut. Be aware ay your surgeon will tell you there is a 3% chance of it returning and fro hat I have been toild the largerv the hydrocele the more chance of it coming back.I have had to have it done three times but most people I know have just had it done once. Had the last operation 12weeks ago now, it went back to normal size straight away, no bruising as like before but after 5 weeks it suddenly got large again, phoned the hospital and they made an appointment for another ultrasound. Three days later it went down to the size of an egg, I still had the ultrasound and it was perfectly normal, it has since gone down a little bit more. The surgeon and specialist are quiet hap[py with the result but stated that it will take time to get back to normal in time and that depends on the person. I have not got a problem with it other than a little bit of an ache now and then but that is natural so they say. Go for the surgery is my advice there is nothing to be afraid of, at least you will have a nice sleep lol

This is for you: Aspiration w/sclerothrapy is the best first-line treatment. Look studies up online and decide for yourself.. Less risky than surgery in every way. This is for others who will stumble across these posts: I spent a year researching this treatment with studies from around the world. It is a no-brainer. Just had sclerotherapy done with 3% Phenol a few days ago. For those of you in the western US, try Dennis Mitchell PA at St George Urology in St George, UT. He did a great job. Don't know if it worked yet but to have a 60-70% chance of getting rid of this thing first try based on studies. Being out of only a few hundred bucks, no pain, and going about my regular activities same day, it was so worth it. He said he has had success with this treatment in the past with similar success as in the studies. Another guy who'll do it is Dr Adams in Cedar City, UT. My wife spoke with his office and he said the one time he did it, the guy was in pain for a few days but the hydrocele didn't come back. It's a waiting game for me but had such a good experience I'd do it again. Have follow up appointment scheduled in January. Good luck everyone.
