Hi, I'm 2 weeks 4 days Post-op RTHR

I know everyone heals different, but after 18 days I still have to use my walker. Can't wait until I transfer to a cane. I have home therapy 3 times a week. Also doing bed exercises twice a day and chair exercises every hour including walking around. This morning I got a new pain in my groin. Has anyone experienced this?

Hi Alice, Rocketman told you the truth when he said it is a long recovery. I ended up having a 10 day stay in the hospital, and then had 6 weeks of visits from therapists, and a nurse. At the 9th week, i changed from my walker to a cane. I try to walk without here at the house, but do a lot of hobbling. I don't recall a groin pain, but i have lots of pain in my leg, which i am sure is my muscles healing. Just hang in there do your exercises, this too shall passl
Ty for your response to my msg.

Hi Connie, I know something about "long recoveries" as I had 2 knee replacement & one knee revision done back in 1999, 2002 & 2003.
So it's OK going slow motion, I know I will get there...I stayed in hospital 9 days. They wanted to make sure I was able to walk cause I'm a care giver for my husband who has tramatic brain injury from a vehicle accident. They knew I would have little help when I got home.
I am set up to have 4 weeks of home therapy, thats through August.
I have exercises I do in my chair every hour and then I walk around the house then also.
Hugs,
Alice

I think physical therapy is good, but keep in mind that before they wake you, they rotate your leg into various positions to make sure the hip won't pop out. If you're not in perfect physical shape, the muscles can be somehow injured. That's what happened to me--once my pain meds wore off, my left hip (I got both done at the same time) was great--post surgery of course, but basically good. But my right side hurt, and no one could tell me why (I suspect the doctor had an idea, but I don't think they want to say anything for liability purposes). I had the home physical therapy, and afterward it really hurt. But once I gave it a chance to heal (I'm done with the home version and haven't started the out-patient) it's really better! I can run around (not really run yet, but walk a lot without anything, and normally!) without medication--but I tried the physical therapy again, and it hurts again, but less (I didn't push myself much, I'm further along). So I don't know--I can do everything almost I did pre-surgery, but I'm stiff when I stand.
I'd consider letting your physical therapist know and taking it easy.

hi alice,
sounds to me that you are doing great - amazing how many muscles in parts of our body wake up during the recovery --- I guess it is, at least in my case, from not being used (properly or not at all) for a while -
we are so aware of everything that is going on and think the worse has happened - listen to your body closely - we are learnig to walk properly - our body is not in balance yet, hence the walker, rollator, crutches and cans we need - we are so eager to ditch them, aren't we ..
you are lucky that you have PT coming to your home 3x a week - it gives you a head start ....
big warm hug and know that all is well

Hi Renee,
I think I'm doing great. All these muscles are getting a workout.
I have certain exercises I do twice a day, and 3 others I do every hour. So when PT comes to my house, they just watch me do them. So really I don't need them to "watch" me 3 days a week, cause I do them by myself the other 4 days a week....LOL
Hugs to you,
Alice

HI, I'm 3.5 weeks out from surgery and just started using cane 24 7. Don't rush recovery. Don't train constantly. Surgery needs lots of rest along with some exercising. Anterior method is somewhat easier then Posterior but we got along well with latter for decades. DO NOT let therapists force any issues. No pain no gain is BS. Remember Ice is your best friend,. 20min per hr. Not directly on skin. Don't be shy taking narcotic pain meds especially for sleeping.
Good luck, you will in time work it all out.

I'm looking forward to when I can move to my cane, but not rushing it. I do rest a lot too, taking naps everyday. I had the posterior method, scar is 19 inches long and 27 staples came out last week.
I ice it 20 mins per hour, makes it feel real good. Also take percocet, especially for sleeping.

I too find myself nodding off at different times of day. Yes just for a few minutes no longer than a 1/2 hour. Guess our bodies are tired from this...
Wishing you the best too.

Hi Jozie,
I looking forward to moving to the cane...They never gave me sox, so I haven't worn any.
I can't wait to drive either. I know I got about 3 weeks left before I can do that. But a girl can wish.....
