Hi

Im 21 years old and have been recently diagnosed with a rare kidney disease called vasculitis, I am on a number of medication including prednisolone. I suffer from all the side affects and im having a real hard time with it, e.g Weight gain, moon face, Stretch marks. Im currently on i have been reduced frm 60mg quite quickly but these side affects still remain. Does any body know if i will return back to normal?

Thanx x

Hi there, I wonder if you got any responses to your question as my husband has also been recently diagnosed with vasculitis. He is now 2 months into the treatment and is really struggling. Have you got any advice ideas or general support info? I hope very much that you are now at the stage where you are feeling better and able to function properly? Kind regards & thanks in advance.

    Hi There,

I have been on Prenisolone for the past eleven years, due to kidney failure in 1996. The highest dose I have been on has been 10mg and it doesn't take long to get the moon face, weight gain, thin skin and bruising easily among others even on that dosage. Several times I have slowly, over a period of months, reduced them down to 2mg, but always end up having to up the dose for some reason or another.

At the moment I am have been on 5mg for a year and find the side effects are a lot better. If I watch what I eat I can keep the weight down a bit, If I knock myself I don't bruise quite so easily.

Hopefully over time you may be able to reduce the Prenisolone down further which should make things a bit easier.

hiya, Im sorry to hear that in someone so young! Im 35 and also take steroids for emphysema and asthma and COPD. I have been on them for 3 years on and off but the past year constantly so I know exactly how you feel with the 'moon face', weight gain etc. Its horrible eh! Im all bloated at the moment, my face is like a football!! Im on 50mg as have another infection so my aim is to get back down to a maintenance dose of 10mg. Id love to stop taking them but have been told its most likely I will be on them for life as it can be very dangerous after being on them so long to stop taking them as my body probably wont produce its own steroid now which is seemingly deadly!! Although Id never before heard of it being so important to us, does anyone else have similar experiences at my age, or any age really? Help.... I could go on forever with symptoms etc which Im sure you already know if you are reading this. Thanks!!
