It hasnt been very long since you had your tlhr.  Did they do it anterially?  I had to go to dr to get sleeping pill.  Are you receiving therapy?

Yep - we all know it's terrible - just get what sleep you can, whenever and wherever you can.

Adjust with loads of pillows, accept help inpositioning yourself, move the bits you are allowed to move the good leg if you have one), and grit your teeth, it will all pass - eventually.

    Hi Tina,

well, as you found out, you are definitely not alone in the not-sleeping department -

everyone has their own coping mechanisms - those weeks are exhausting - and I was allowed to sleep on unoperated side right away (pillow between knees) and still - by the time I was comforatble and had to get out of bed , limp to the loo , get back in and so and so .... I was happy to get 2-3 hours uninterupted sleep at that time ...

hang in there - try to not get too frustrated ....

    big warm hug

I am new to this forum and am 3-4 weeks post op left side thr.  It is the sleeping that is the worst bit!!!!!  It is getting a little bit easier now (I managed to sleep from 12 to 4 last night!!!) but it is a very unnatural position!  However, now have a memory foam mattress topper, a big soft bolster pillow and make sure I do my exercises last thing and do the in bed leg exercises when restless-legs start.  I have halved my pain meds and strangely that seems to have helped too.  Mind you, I have always woken up at least once in the night - low bladder capacity I think!  So nice to find this forum, best wishes to all of you.

      Liz,

As I said to someone else .....

Let's be honest .... there is not a lot you can do about sleeping .... at night you just can't because you are forced to lie on your back for 6 weeks.  I had a second round of this just 4 weeks later after my revision, so I know what it's like.

I found my iPod with soothing music was best, also I went into the spare room to give my wife some respite from my fidgeting.  I found the spare bed had a harder mattress which suited me better.

You can move your 'good' leg in bed, i used to flex mine sideways, bending my knee.  Also, you can do anti-DVT 'bed exercises' like raising and lowering both your knees together.

As a friendly policeman said ...

You've done the crime - had a THR

You have to pay the price - restless legs, endless trips to the bathroom, no sleep

You will be free soon - when you recover, you will be free of OA pain.

I did nap in between doing my jigsaw puzzles (adult colouring books are also very good, I will opt for them next time).
