Hi just new to the forum

Hi I am just new to the forum. I am not sure if I have PMR or not. A bit of history. I developed severe muscle pain in neck, shoulders and hips in 2013 with an ESR of 35. The pain and stiffness was so severe I was bed bound for most of the time and moving was difficult. I was 52 at the time. My GP said it could not be PMR because I was too young. I then saw rheumatologist who said the same, I was too young. My GP then gave me a diagnosis of Chronic fatigue syndrome instead. Any way gradually over the years the pain got better on its own but I was severely disabled for years. Then only recently the pain suddenly returned in my hips and pelvic girdle leaving me unable to move around. My GP still doesn't think it is PMR, I am 56 now.

Maybe you should go go back to GP. I started having problems aged 40 and was diagnosed age 45 with PMR by rheumatologist;there are always exceptions to an average age.Good luck

Dear Christina, do you think your GP would let you have a week’s trial of steroids? If they don’t work you know it is not PMR.

The guidelines say "over 50" - and that DOESN'T mean it can't happen younger. I was still 51 when my symptoms first started. You need a new GP who is willing to read the guidelines.

As has been suggested - a week's trial of 20mg pred would rule out CFS, it wouldn't respnd.

You should not have to suffer like that and I do know how it feels.  As suggested by others, a trial of prednisone would help confirm the dx.  I began to feel better at the end of one day when I was started on a trial of pred.  Be persistent, if one doc doesn't help you, change to someone else until you get help.  Most the MDs have never had PMR and therefore cannot relate to the paralizing pain.  Good luck!

Christina, unfortunately PMR does not know age, as I read about PMR some people in their have fallen under it spell. CRP test along ESR, then several weeks on 20 mg of Prednisone , if the PMR pain subsidizes and blood test readings improve. You probably have PMR and your doctors migth need to be updated on PMR. Good luck on the rest of your journey. Try to stay positive. ☺️

Hi Christina. I’m so sorry to hear how you’ve been left in pain. I was 48 when I was diagnosed in 2014.  I’d definitely ask for a second opinion! RD

hi you have my sympathy. i am now a year into having throbbing bruised like feeling every single day on the left side, now on the right.  pain in top of arms, shoulders and hips.  i am now 54.  have seen neurology 3 times had a brain scan, told its migraine.  but i not happy, have finally got gp to send me for second opinion to a different neurologist. but could be months.  my bloods are always fine.  so they say its not rheumi issue.  so so fed up.  as soon as i get up in the morning and walk to bathroom, the throbbing tingling starts. then it will go off, then all day i get a stabbing, or a throbbing.  in exactly same place.  so so fed up.  i can understand your frustration.  i just keep going back and back, wish i had money to private. good luck with a diagnosis.

It's time your doctors got educated - up to 20% of PMR/GCA patients never have raised blood markers and there are other rheumatoid disorders that are also seronegative, especially in the early stages.

I do wish doctors would treat the patient in front of them and not the lab results.
