Hi! My son is gong to be 5 in a few months and I have been concerned about his hearing for about 6 months. I have been to the doctors 4 times in the last year and they all said that the ear looked fine, there was ear wax but it looked normal. I finally had enoigh and insisted that I see an audiologist. When we he had the test, the audilogist did say that the hearing was below the standard level and because he had a cold this may be the reason, I was advised to come back in 3 months. I said that I did not want to wait for so long and wanted to see the consultant ASAP. Two weeks later at his school he had his hearing test and he failed that. I am now waiting for the appointment with the consultant and I hope that he does not need a hearing aid.

    My three year old has just been told she needs gromets after having passed three hearing tests. I had to be persistant about her not hearing me!Her hearing loss is because she still has fluid in her middle ear otherwise known as glue ear(A two second test that the audiologist should have done when you had the hearing test) the only reason we have got this far is because i spend so much time telling audiologists and heath visitors that i want a referal to someone with more experience. Her ability to hear is affected by many things including colds and dairy. This has now impacted on her speech as well. It annoys me that we have to fight so hard to not just be dimissed as a worried parent. but try not to worry too much until you have something to worry about you will just upset yourself and your child.if this is going to be a long term thing you need to start off in a good place.     On and off for about a year I though my 3 year old had a hearing problem but dismissed it as it wasn't persistent. He got a really bad cold and I shoulded on him to come to me when playing with other children - they all turned round except him. Contacted my health visitor and she suggested glue ear. After a referral to the ENT clinic we were told there was 5 month waiting list. We asked for a private appointment on the Thursday morning and saw the ENT specialist and oncologist on the following Monday! It was worth every penny - he gave us a nasal spray to try and some Swedish ballons (Otovent) to blow up. The ballons worked a treat when he didn't have a cold - he could blow them up no problem - except he nearly always had a cold. Next appointment 8 weeks later he suggested either a hearing aid or grommits. We opted for grommits and and adenoidectomy. The improvement in his hearing is amazing - 8 weeks later its still great, grommits are still in but he has an ear infection which the GP says is not connected. We are hoepfull that we won't need too many more operations. But would do it again if his hearing goes backwards.

    I am 44 and have the same problem as yourself. I have not been to see anyone about it but would be interested if you get any advice. I have read about dairy products being a possible cause so I have just started cutting them out to see if it helps. I was also thinking about seeing a Homeopath.I dont get pain, just a constant feeling of pressure behind ears. I find it hard to concentrate most of the time so I am hoping to eventually find a cure.
