Hiatal Hernia Issues.........wanting answers and relief

Posted , 7 users are following.

For about 6 weeks I’ve been experiencing severe abdominal bloating, nausea, chest pressure, belching, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach pain, foul taste in my mouth, feeling of lump in my throat right at gag reflex, feeling of anything I swallow just sitting in my chest,  hiccups for years after eating, discomfort while sitting up, reclining, and walking around and just recently it’s begun when I sleep.  Endoscopy showed a small hiatal hernia ( wasn’t told the size), barium swallow also showed a small HH and neither showed any narrowing or constriction in the esophagus.

PPIs not giving any relief. I’ve been off all gluten and sugar for nearly 4 months. I eat no sugar, no carbonated beverages, no fruit juices, I do drink 1 cup of coffee in the morning.  I get no relief from anything.  My entire summer break ( I’m a teacher) has been suffering and in complete discomfort. Felt I was completely dismissed by the dr yesterday when discussed repairing the HH. I am not one who wants to be on meds for the rest of my life.  He told me I shouldn’t be having this much pain with one no bigger than mine.  Well, isn’t that a subjective statement to make?  Isn’t that telling someone who has a small break in the bone that their pain isn’t as bad as the person next to them because the other persons break is bigger?  Pain is pain!

If I have a sliding HH I’ve read and been told they’re harder to diagnose due to the fact they “slide” and could not be in the sliding position at the time of the scope/swallow.  I’m just so frustrated and discouraged.  I’m needing and wanting help!  I need someone to listen to me and understand that what I am feeling is real and not in my head as I was made to feel yesterday.   Someone who wants to give me my quality of life back.   I am a marathon runner.  Have completed multiple full marathons in over 20 states. So I’m not one who just sits around being inactive.

Would love some feedback and any comments from anyone who’s suffering from similar symptoms and issues.  Anyone considering surgical repair?

    Hi Lynne

Have a HH myself, was diagnosed about 2 and a half years ago and still getting pretty much the same symptoms as you have explained above.

Have meds as well that don't do much. Was very active before hand also played football and was a regular gym goer. Haven't been able to do any sort of rigorous excercise or the symptoms get extremely bad so would be interesting to see how that is with you now. Can you still do your marathons ?

I am currently trying the same eating gluten free and sugar free etc. But that doesn't help too much for myself either. Sometimes eating cleaner makes you feel better and can slightly reduce symptoms. Mine get particularly bad after drinking alchohol or  excercise.

As I have had this quite a while and has had consultations with specialists numerous times I am on the verge of begging for surgery as nothing else seems to be working. Thr doctors seem to be really against doing surgery for some reason not sure why.

If I were you I would try cutting out the coffee completely as I know coffee and tea are quite bad for a HH. Try a peppermint tea and see how you are. If still the same try cutting them out completely. I was the same with regard to losing weight I lost a large amount of weight even though I was quite slim so had to go back eating normal meals to put weight back on.

    Hope that helps a bit

      Bryan:

This has all come about very quickly for me in the last several months. I’ve not been running for quite a while do the fact I had a complete tummy tuck a year and half ago. With that being said I have decided just as recently as today that my tummy tuck is to blame for my HH issues.

After speaking to a friend who is a Dr it is HIGHLY likely that I have had the HH for a long time with no issues. Having the tummy tuck and tightening the abdominal wall has added pressure to the area around the stomach.  So when I eat, sit, breath or whatever my stomach has nowhere to go but up and push into and through that diaphragm into the esophagus. This would explain ALL my symptoms and constant discomfort.  It also explains why all my blood work and CTscans are normal.  So no meds will ever fix this situation. I will need surgical repair or this will only get worse over time with the constant pushing and rubbing the stomach will do against the diaphragm.  So I’m being referred to a surgeon in Nashville who specializes in HH repairs and pray he understands and sees my frustration and need for relief.

I have exactly same as you and was refered for urgent endoscopy in march in case had ulcer. Was in middle of ivf treatment and had to postpone due to it. Had test last week which just confirmed HH. Had one 2009 told gastritis and H hernia. The pain is unreal. Feeling like balloon under ribs at left. Bile in mouth, lump throat and feels like closing over, severe burning in stomach area. Just sent back to gp for usual meds. nexium and ranitidine double dose which do nothing. Bottle of gaviscon a day and Rennie tablets still no joy. Not sure how much more can take
