hiatal hernia nightmare.

Hi,had my haital hernia around 5 years now (at least that was when it was confirmed). Was ok but in the last 3 months it has been a nightmare. Can hardly breathe at times, pains mainly in chest, arms and stomach (due to the hernia pressing onto my vagus nerve).Worried me at first and went to the hospital thinking i was having a heart attack.Did all tests and heart was ok thank god.

Had to give my job up on the building site as a labourer (something i really enjoyed) due to this hernia and now can only do very light work.

My life is now a nightmare due to this hernia.

Ive gone from being very fit and active to unfit and miserable.

    Hello Krambo

I am so sorry you have this problem.

Have you checked into having surgery, I have been reading that many people do and it is successful but I see it is necessary to get a doctor that has done many of them, there is one in Seattle that has done many, his name is Dr Aye and if you are not near Seattle, just need to do your research, also ask your doctor if he knows one that is very good and experienced in this type of surgery. I go next week to see this doctor to see if I am a candidate and I may not be because of some health issues and age. I also have a very severe breathing problem, trouble eating most things, also terrible pain between my shoulders. My hernia is is size of 8.1 cm there is hope for you. The best to you

You don't say what the doctor is saying? You will probably need some tests do ne to determine what has happened. I had surgery for a paraesophageal hernia last year. I had sharp pains that I thought were heart attacks but were not. My heart was fine but I certainly wasn't. Don't wait , get checked out.

Basically, the Dr is saying its my vagus nerve giving me the major problems, when my hernia touches it.

An Hiatal Hernia will not give you "heart attack"Symptoms unless it is pressing on the vagus nerve. If you get Heart Attack symptoms then obviously check it out just to make sure it is the hernia causing it.The vagus nerve sends signals to a few organs including the heart.

    Dear Krambo

I am so sorry you have this.

I had this diagonised in 2013 and completely alright in 2015.

it was horrible in the initial days but I acknowleded the fact that I was not normal and so I can't have everything what a normal being has. I had followed religiously what my doctor said. He recommended a combination of drugs, Diet and Yoga. It did miracles in my case. Till May, 2015, I had occasional symptoms of HH but when the endoscopy was done, I was terribly relieved. the medication was tapered down from ITOPRIDE initially to a no-side effects fomacid now. I advice you to have some strict diet regulation combined with mind relaxing methods. I reiterate: HH is curable. Good luck.
