Hiatal hernia pulse effects breathing

Hi all

I was diagnosed with a small hiatus hernia and 2 stomach ulcers 2 months ago.

I was put on 2x esomeprazole rbx daily.

My symptoms seem to have changed.

Started with pain and tightness up high on my chest. That lasted about 2 weeks.

Then I started getting pains in lower stomach.

And now the last 3 weeks I have been getting heart palpitations. My heart beats very hard and I can feel it no matter what I am doing. Sometimes I also feel a pulse in my lower stomach. And a lot of the time I feel a pulse just below my ribcage. When this happens the pulse is so heavy/hard that it effects every breath in and out. My breathing takes a slight pause with every heartbeat.

Anyone else felt this?

Get back to the doctor & have a gastroscopy .the fast heartbeats could be stress but mine was a short circuit & I had to have a procedure .I had my Hernia for years & blamed lots of symptoms on it. Best be sure. Good luck

      Thanks for the reply ruby

I had a gastroscopy. That's how we found the hernia and ulcers.

My palpitations are not fast. They are regular speed but very noticeable. Like I am getting a 1inch punch to the chest.

How did they find your short circuit?

I have had an EKG, stress test and 24hr holter monitor. All came back clear.

I had the fast heartbeats for three years thinking it was the Hiatis hernia, they would last for between 10 mins to 3 hours at 185 per min...scary. The I  went in for a knee replacement & had an attack while in hospital & pretty soon had doctors & nurses swarming around me & had an injection to bring it back to normal. After an E.C G was told to see a heart man, & I had a procedure called cardiac ablation, where they check all circuits & find the defected one & zap it with laser while awake, & it seems to have worked. Sounds like yours isn't the same though but get as many checks as possible .I live in Cape Town where if you have medical aid the service is excellent & we have some great specialists( nurses could use a shakeup though)  so good luck & hope you get it sorted.

Hi, I have the same problems. I have a small HH but no ulcers. I have breathing problems (sometimes worse in the mornings) and sometimes palpitations too. Not really rapid and they don't last long but like a hard thump

      It's worrying isn't it Christine

I only get the breathing issue with the massive heart thumps which can last 2 minutes too 6 hours.

Occasionally other times I feel a little short of breath and I notice I am taking short breaths with my chest instead of my abdomin.

Which leads me to I also get pains in my guts and a feeling of my abbs being tensed for a few hours at times.

Have you had any heart checks Christine?

Keep each other in mind if we find any results or relief.

hi yes,I have and all the tests have come up clear, it's reassuring but doesn't answer the questions. It's a log hard slog on the NHS

    Hi,

like ruby says please get triaged at least by your GP. Never ignore increased heartbeat or palpitations. Do you have a blood pressure monitor at home? They are so worth investing in. The surgery nurses say they are not as accurate (wrist ones) as the cuff style but at least you can compare readings. It will give you your pulse reading too, which should be around 70 (<5>) and I have fatty lipomas in my arms so when they use a cuff its sky high as pinches as if my arm were to burst!!

i take Omeprazole fir my HH, which I feel has got bigger over time as it does affect my breathing and I too get palpitations, especially after a hot or large meal. Does anyone else get that?

I have read the contra indications for long term use of anti-reflux tablets and it does affect your bones, my knees are dreadful with no spacing on one knee at all (bone on bone shown on X-Ray) so I take Glucosamine Chondroitin high strength which my physiotherapist said is actually now recognised in the NHS as the nearest replacement to cartilage. I sure notice if I miss a day or two. They are about £30 for a huge bottle in Holland and Barrett or online at say, Boots or Amazon, but be sure to get high strength!

Hi brent. Did you ever feel like you were having a muscle cramp just below your rib cage. Then when it started going away it would pulsate. I know its been a while. Sometimes it burns like I've torn the muscle. Just looking for answers. Thanks.

I can relate to this.  I have a 5cm sliding hiatus hernia and suffer with breathing, swelling, palpitations, feeling of something stuck in my chest.  All what is mentioned from other suffers.  It gets so bad that occasionally I have to go to A&E and have morphine to ease the pain and symptoms.  They tend to keep me several hours on a morphine drip then send me off home.  Each time I have an ECG which is always ok and they just saw see your GP etc.  I have had every test known to man and still have no diagnosis.  All I know is that since a different hospital took my gall bladder out over 2 years ago I have suffered big time.  It changes your life and makes you miserable.  I can no longer drink alcohol (occasional odd drink but I suffer for it) and even holidays and nights out are put under pressure.  No one wants to know its just takes these 14 pills a day and get on with it!

      Hi Stephie

It has been a while since I posted anything here but I feel your pain! I too have been to A&E on occasions, had many tests and the only thing that shows is a small 3cm sliding HH. I'm not convinced however this is the only problem or possibly the HH has done damage elsewhere....I can only guess. Its when you get to the " you must have anxiety " quote that really irritates, I know I don't, not unless my symptoms are severe which they have been over the last few weeks. I have been back today for another barium swallow - tests to follow, I'm being tested for autoimmune too but I know my heart is affected, it's just getting a GP to accept what I say. My heart tests 3-4 years ago were fine but I'm in my mid 50's & just because I was tested before and all is ok doesn't mean its all ok now! This is so frustrating isn't it

Hi Stephie I have the same problem. My life is quite miserable too. I know what happened with me to have this. It was kind of all of a sudden. My life has changed completly too...to worse of course. In my case I moved from miserable life to a bad life (slightly better) quitting doctor´s pills and having half lemon and baking soda 1/4 teaspoon after meals (around 20 minutes later of the meal) even though sometimes I have a dark feeling like this is the end, vegetables and fruits give me some kind of hope......

I too have these symptoms along with intense pain at the top of the diaphragm which feels like someone has punched me. I also recently have started with dizzy spells, increased heart rate, breathlessness and feeling faint.  I have a 6cm hiatus hernia with Barrett’s. I have had my hernia for many years. I really don’t know the answer. I have had many different medications and nothing really works for long. It is the most miserable condition which I am trying to learn to live and cope with. I wish you well. It would be good to know if these symptoms are common for thís condition
