Hiatus hernia 4 month on

hi there I had key hole surgery to repair a large hiatus hernia on 1st of October 2014 .Four month on I'm having a lot of pain and discomfort in heart area of chest under arm and in left shoulder. Also feel tired a lot and low on energy, certain foods are still a problem eg bread and dry texture foods to swollow also struggle with beer so tend to avoid. I'm a big strapping lad and expected to have got over this op a lot quicker good thing to have come out of this is that I've managed to keep the two stone off that I lost before op. Was wondering if other people who have ad the same op have had similar experiences and could share them with me would be glad to hear!!

hi ian I was on this forum before I had my op and was feeling exactly like you i wouldn't be put off to much by other people story because a lot of my symptoms stoped right away after op. As for the op mine took around 45 mins and went really well, felt really crap for about 2 week had a month off work which they recommend with me having a pysical job! Took me round 8/9 week to get back in to things at work. Which is probably to be expected after having your stomach altered around. After op expect a lot of discomfort in shoulders and stomach due to nerve damage and trapped gas and swelling. stick to soups and mashed veg for fist week at least and take chewable multi vitimins to help keep your strength up. Wish you all the best and good luck

Hi Luke.I had the same op July 2014. The pain you describe is due to referred pain.I have been to hospital twice with suspected angina as pain so bad.Apparently after op any indigestion pain doesnt give reflux or gas(burps!) so can cause pain in chest.Having investigations at moment. As you have found avoid certain foods like fresh bread and rich sauces. The tiredness and lack of energy is your body still adjusting to the op.Hope this helps.

Hi Luke My symptoms have settled down with watching my diet. Not too larghas come backe portions and avoiding certain veg. Unfortunately my hernia has come back and I will have to have major surgery. This might be due to intial weakness of my diaphragm so dont worry.Hope you feel better soon.

I am 65 and have a 9cm hiatus hernia. I am on the list for a keyhole operation but surgeon not sure he can do it keyhole.  I had projectile vomiting for years but now have terrible indigestion pain and bad pain through my back and shoulder blades.  I eat very little do not enjoy food and I am actually overweight, maintaining it I think through eating high calorie puddings or anything I can enjoy.

i am apprehensive about a major operation but have been told it will only get worse.

    any advice for me ?

Hi thistles it's hard for me to give you any advice regarding having op or not because my main symtoms were alittle different from yours, I suffered really bad acid reflux and chronic trapped wind plus at the time I was having a lot of heart palpitations. After I had the op these symtoms stopped straight away although I do still have the odd palpation now and again. I think you should have a good think about what you want to do and don't be put off too much by other people because you may have no problems what so ever. As for the operation its self mine went like clock work my consultant came to see me about hour before the op and explained what would happen he told me how long op would take(2 hour) and what to expect afterwards ! When I was took back to ward after op the consultant came to see me once again and said the op went like clock work and only took 45 min. Expect a lot of discomfort for next month especially in shoulders which is due to nerve damage and trapped wind.

Thank you for your reply Luke,  I think it is difficult to decide what to do about an op as everyone seems to have slightly different symptoms and severity.  I feel tired very low on energy and difficulty eating and would not want it to be any worse.  I hope you feel better soon and that it will just take time .  I would speak to your doctor as I wish I had not put up with my problems for so long.  Good luck

    Hi Luke,

i had surgery for rolling hiatus hernia at the end of October. First, congratulations on keeping the weight off. That will help you in the long run. If you are low on energy you may want to check your iron levels. I had trouble with bread for about 2 1/2 months but can eat it now as long as I chew well and drink some fluids with it. I still get gas pains , but they are easing up. They used to wake me in the middle of the night and I would be in agony. I sometimes get sore under my ribs. My biggest problem is flatulence, particularly in the evening. I find I can't drink pop because of the carbonation. It really makes me gassy. I imagine beer would do the same. I am at a good weight for my height now and I think that helps me a lot. Do you see your surgeon again or go to your GP now? I see my surgeon again in one week from now.

Hi judy glad to hear your getting there, think we may have spoke before we both had ops last year. I saw my consultant in November about 7/8 was after op he said the pain was was getting was actually coming from the stomach area and that my brain perceived it as being in my shoulder and chest, he also said he shouldn't have to see me again unless anything untoward happened. I've as yet not touched any fizzy pop only beer which makes me want to vomit but I can't get it up or belch! And like you flatulance is a big issue. Hope you make a full recovery soon and thanks for your reply all the best luke
