Hiatus Hernia

Hi,

After getting the scope last year i was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia.

Iv been taking 40mg Esomeorazole with 9 months.

With the last few days Iv had a sensation that theres a lump in my throat , I can swallow perfectly and when i eat it seems to subside but a little while after eating its back again. I constantly feel like i need to clear my throat.

I have no sore throat just a sensation that something is stuck...

Does anybody else get this or could it be something else.

they reason for having the scope done initially was because of the same reason and having a sickly stomach after eating some foods... but im thinking should i still have this sensation while taking tablets everyday.

It is related to reflux - try low acid diet - there is a Facebook support group called Acid Watchers Diet, you might want to give it a try, You could also have LPR which the diet might help.

I had this for a period of time, and now I get it off/on. What initially helped me was taking 40mg omeprazole for a period of time and it disappeared. However, now that my symptoms are so severe, omeprazole doesn't help. In your case it seems the same, you've been on omeprazole for a while, and now your body is used to it, thus the break through symptom of a lump in your throat feeling. I find that trying to relax myself, and remember there's not actually anything stuck in my throat helps somewhat relieve the feeling believe it or not. Also, definitely change your diet if you haven't already. What might help too is sleeping with a humidifier and staying hydrated. Helps with any phlegm from acid reflux. Overall, just remember as uncomfortable as it may be it WILL go away and it is of no danger. best of luck (:

When I first experienced it, it lasted for about 3 weeks to a month until I got it under control with the omeprazole. Now when I have it, it can last from 1-5 days in a row or so. Unfortunately I'm so used to it that I've become good at ignoring it. I used to take mucinex for mine because it felt like I had to keep clearing my throat or there was phlegm stuck and this seemed to help, but very temporarily. Since your body is so used to omeprazole, have you looked into natural supplements as an alternative? They are better for your body and have a long-term effect. You could start with digestive enzymes before meals, also taking melatonin before you sleep is surprisingly a solution to help eliminate acid reflux while you sleep. May help the lump in throat sensation over time.
