if you have noticed a increase in you symptoms escpecially your breathing you will need to find out if your hernia has increased in size which would explain your increased symptoms. the problem with your breathing can be caused by the stomach sliding through your hiatus(hole)on your diaphragm into your chest causing tightness in your chest and shortness of Breath. as the stomach pushes against the lung
what you are not bieng told is that untreated hernias will get bigger in the abscence of surgical repair. i have experienced this myself as i have had four operations to repair a hiatus hernia which increased in size i got a patch placed to strengthen the area of repair that was twenty two years ago. unfortunately for me there wasnt any laproscopic proceedures available at the time. i am not trying to frighten you i am only trying advise you and make you aware through my own experiences it would be prudent to request an Mri scan to check to see if the 3cm hernia has increased in size which would explain your increased symptoms
and secondly it would put your mind at rest . you did not say if you had any acid reflux or heartburn as a result of your hiatus hernia?
dos /donts avoid the following:- gym any heavy lifting and any digging in the garden and keep an eye on your weight. raise the top end of your bed or get a v pillow.
you can get further information from the internet by typing in untreated hernia .
if you need any further info i am happy to help

barrets osoephagus is a condition caused by prolonged acid reflux burning the ling of your oesophagus resulting in changes to the cells in the lining i had surgery for this reason alone despite what other symptoms i had. omeprazole reduces the amount of acid production in the stomach . it does not prevent acid refluxing into your osoephagus. dont trust any condition that is silent. i hope your ct scan goes well

I had a minor episode this morning where I awoke with nausea and anxiety again. There's definitely something going on while lying down, but strangely with adjusted diet it doesn't happen to me. I'm keeping a log at this point for when these episodes occur, so I can track this. I awoke with a higher heartbeat, anxiety, and extreme nausea, but it goes away after like 5 to 15 minutes after being awake.
Yesterday I decided to try lactose free milk, and I believe that caused the episode last night. It wasn't intense shortness of breath like I used to get, but a minor episode. This morning I tried milk again, and ended up in a coughing fit after eating, so milk is something I'm going to try avoiding.
I have blood work coming up on Friday, so I'll post what I find out when I know anything.
I'd also like to ask you if you drink/drank alcohol much? In my case, I used to drink heavy and recently quit again about a month ago because of this issue.

after many years of heartburn and indegestion after bieng previously diagnosed with a hiatus hernia i went for an endoscopy
and they found i had barratts osophagus due to prolonged leakage of acid reflux this was despite trying ever tablet the chemist had for stomach problems??
and as you are aware there is side effects from taking medication.
barrets osophagus can only come back if the valve becomes incompetant (does not shut properly) after a fundoplaction proceedure to tighten the valve at the top of your stomach. the surgeon takes your stomach lining and wraps it around your osophagus to tighten the valve at the top of you stomach to stop acid leaking into you osophagus once the valve gets tightened the bottom of your oesophagus gets a chance to heal . i can honestly state that i have never had reflux heartburn or even vomited in 25years. im not saying there isnt any new drugs on the market today that could not treat barrats osoephagus how ever it is only a treatment not a total cure as acid will still leak from the incompetant valve. however on the other side of the coin i was informed by my surgeon that if i had not had the op . i would not have been alive today because the barrets oosoephagus would have turned into some thing more nasty. barrets osoephagus if left untreated can burn the into the inner layers and change the elasticity of the osoephagus causing constriction and it can become difficult to swallow.
it would be prudent for some who has barrets osoephagus to have an endoscopy to monitor if the medication they are taking is indeed healing
ther barrats osoephagus.
i hope this info is a help to you i am only trying let you know what is involved through my own expieriences. as i have had 4 open operations and patches place in my chest.

I was an Endo nurse for 20 years
I know u had the hiatal hernia. They still have to resect the Barrett's tissue
even with the fundal ligation did they
remove some of the esophagus.

before my first op i was informed by the surgeon that i had barrats osoephagus due to 10 years of acid reflux and sever heartburn
i wasnt informed by the surgeon if he resected the lower half of my osoephagus.to remove the barrats tissue but i think this is indeed the case because i had my diaphragm lifted and my stomach repositioned and secured i had no symptons of heartburn or any reflux after
op i have had no heartburn for 25years so i think your statement is correct. the surgoen made a good job of the wrap to tighten the valve at the top of my stomach as i have never vomited once in 25 years despite feeling sick. i really wish that laproscopic nissen fundoplication proceedures were available in 1990s as i would not have suffered so much post operative chronic neuralogical pain. assoiciated with open surgery.
