Hiatus Hernia and constant burping/belching

Hi there,

this is my first visit to this site and am hoping someone can give me some tips or advice for my condition. I am a male, 57 yrs of age.

I have had heartburn/indigestion on and off for years. For the past 6 months to a year I have regular bouts of severe burping/belching and acid reflux. I often feel bloated/uncomfortable in the upper stomach area even though I am not a heavy/big eater ( except on occasions when going out for meals - when the bloating/burping is worse )

I have just been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia after having an endoscopy, and am waiting to see my gp for medication. I have previously had a blood test for the Hpylori bug which came back negative, though the doctor took a biopsy during the endoscopy to check for it again. The doctor who carried out the endoscopy seemed to think that the hernia would not be the cause of my burping/belching - does anyone have any similar symptoms and possible remedies ?

Prior to having the endoscopy I was on Omneprazole ( 20mg twice a day ) which had little, if any effect. This burping/belching/bloatedness is really getting me down - any advice/ remedies would be much appreciated, thanks.

    Hi there

I'm 34, female. I have the same problem. Mine due to pregnancy.

I'm not pregnant at the moment. Thing is, with mine, the air will build up in my body and cause me pain and discomfort and would need to stretch and rub all the pressure points to burp for relief. But seems it's getting bad, feels like it blocking my airways. Makes it difficult for me to breath.

Doc said I should see how it goes for a year on medication and if not successful, operating will be the last resort.

The medication isnt working, you may to ask the doctor for a change. Some medications are stronger than others but it really depends on your health system.

I really don't have a reply. I am also searching for a solution to the same predicament of non-stop belching since November as a result of Hiatus Hernia and GERD. I am virtually frustrated! I start burping once get up in the morning until i go to bed at night. I get some level of relief only when exercising but once i stop working out or being physically active it starts again. I have seen several gastroenterologist, been placed on several strict diets, tried different medications, esomeprazole, omeprazole and different other ones i cant even remember. Different proton inhibitors have been used and various types of very strong antacids which just give temporary relief for about 20-30mins then begins again.

It's disturbing because the heart burns are terrible, am always scarred of eating each day because it only worsens the stomach upset and heart burns. My Job involves being sited most of the day so its a misery because the burping never stops except when i stand up to walk around. All the gastro intestinal doctors i have seen have given up and are all suggesting surgery. That's really not an option for me now because am scared because all these problems started after i concluded a surgery for fibroids. I have changed my diet-lifestyle change, am always bloated and uncomfortable with heartburns and stomach aches. I have been treated for H.Pylorie and confirmed now negative but no improvement or comfort. Is the any doctor in the house who can advise further on the way to go because this is really not a life i have been living with soo much discomfort and embarrassment. It's also been expensive maintaining the GERD with the antacids .Isn't the a lasting solution to the agony?

hi I think the burping and belching are classic hiatus hernia, to minimise eat slowly, chew well and avoid anything that triggers it. its like having to live with it, as people who have had surgery don't seem to have good outcomes. I wish the experts could come up with a real cure.
