I have been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia but have had lots of problems with palpitations recently, i also sometimes get a cold shivery feeling some nights as if i am going down with flu, i have suffered from really bad acidity over the last 10 years, i have had three endoscopy's and it was on the last one that i was diagnosed with a hernia, i also get bad chest pain along the sternum and a bad pain where my ribs meet in the middle, it's so depressing, does anybody else suffer from palpitations etc?

I don't have palpitations but I have had moments when my pulse speeds up on me and beats pretty hard in my neck when I'm active.

I had something similar, where my heart would jump up to over 200bpm for some period of time (minutes).

I was diagnosed with SVT (supra ventricular tachycardia).  Basically, there was some piece of tissue in my heart generating it's own beats when it got "activated".. usually by adrenaline from exercise.

I had a procedure to have that tissue ablated.  Been SVT free for ten years, however, now I'm having symptoms that sound strikingly similar to others in this thread:  hiatal hernia causing irregular heart beats.

They wanted me to have the ablation but I wasn't ready to do that & it turns out it's the hernia not the heart that's the problem for me, so far anyway. I've had to figure things out 4 myself most of the time for years now. It's so sad that specialists & technology aren't always better to count on these days compared to the one doctor we used to be able to count on for most things.

Hi I was diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia today after an endoscope, for the last three months I have suffered with extreme dizzyness, vomiting and upper abdonamol and lost around a stone in weight. I have also been having feelings of adrenaline for no reason and palpitations which at one point had me rushed into A&E. I have had my life drastically changed in this time as I am normally very active and healthly and had to stop all physical activity. I am still waiting for urine tests a CT scan and a heart scan but after looking into this issue I am hoping this is the cause of my issues and I can start the road to recovery as I am 33 have three children and want to get back to a fully active life!

OMG!!!! Finally I've found someone who has the exact symptoms I am suffering from within this Hiatal Hernia!!! Sometimes severe palpitations to the point of feeling like passing out!!! Very scary!!! Doctors seem to have this "ho-hum" attitude about it and think that it's due to anxiety! Bull crap!! My friend who researches everything told me to juice 16 oz. of carrot/spinach juice daily and at another time during the day (closer to evening) drink 16 oz. of carrot juice straight. Believe it or not and much to my surprise these juices stop the palpitations almost immediately! I was desperate so I was willing to try anything to stop these God awful palpitations. I have not suffered from acid reflux or any of the other symptoms that go along with this HH because I eat small meals throughout the day. I avoid all foods that would cause any kind of flare ups!! I'm thinking that I want to look into the surgical procedure to close up the opening of this HH. Anybody actually have the surgery??

      Hi Kimberly

I have much the same symptoms as you, with a Hiatus Hernia and Palpitations, and no great help from my doctor. My symtoms always seem to flare up after meals,  ( But not all meals ) I have seen posts on the internet which suggests that these symptoms are in fact caused by irritation of the Vagus nerve, and that the irritation is caused by the Hiatus Hernia. One of the posts recommended Ginger Root Tablets / Capsules which are reputed to soothe the nerve, which i tried, and they do seem to work.

You need to check out Roemheld syndrome or gastric cardia. Doctors today are clueless. You get a better chance to resolve your health problems with the help of a psychic or fortune reading person than the actual Md. Good luck.

There is a good series of videos on u tube showing links between Palpitations,Hiatus Hernia, and the Vagus nerve. Also causes and cures are discussed.

The videos are by a cardiologist;;Dr Sanja Gupta, and the site is called York Cardiology.

I have experienced the palpitations before my surgery 6 weeks ago.  I had the same chest pains for about 30 years having gone to many different doctors, They diagnosed me with acid reflux, and gave so many different PPI to take.  The attacks mimic a heart attack which they did.  It started out maybe a couple bouts a year.  Then I learned what the trigger foods were, red sauce, gravy of any kind..  I stayed away from all that for 30 years, then the last year was dreadful I couldn't even take cough medicine for a cold, antibiotic for sinus infec.  I would get the raging chest pains to the point of I would not know if it were a heart attack. At the time the gastro Dr. that I no longer see gave me nitro if the pains started.  I did only once take it because the pains in my chest continued all day.  Upon taking it I nearly blacked out. The pain left me but it was terrible.  Now I search for another gastro dr. this dr. recommended after trying more meds. about 6 mos later said have a Ph Probe test and motility study.  That was the saving grace where they finally found what was wrong.  It was the Sphincter was weak in the esophogaes and I had 60% acid in my stomach going into the hiatal hernia which the precious dr said was a sliding hiatal.  Total opposite it was the other way and rather large.  Therefore all the acid was pouring into my chest.  I thank God for this new doctor and his expertise.  He repaired the hernia, cleaned scar tissue in my gall bladder surgery from years ago. and did the Nissen Fundoplication.  Why gastro doctors dont order the ph probe and motility studies when people complain of these pains for years is beyond me.  Instead they keep ordering meds.  The surgeon I have said the same thing to me and said nobody should be on any PPIs for extended periods of time.  I am proof of it all....so folks demand they do testing rather than make u suffer as I did for so many years. Now I am 6 weeks post op and recovering well it is a slow process but its better ever week.  I will never as the dr said take any ant acids again.....

THANK-YOU for this forum! Have had issues related to all of this for years. Have a stress test to check my heart next month, my doc just told me today they did find a small issue with my heart last time I went to the ER. However, they did not tell me that AT the ER?!! Unbelievable! Anyway, I've wondered about a connection with my hernia & what appears to be heart issues for years now. Was at the doc today because I had a scary issue last week - woke up to a wildly racing heart, hot as heck, dizzy, slightly neaseated, etc. took my temp because I thought flu; I thought my temp would be high but was instead low! By about a degree and a half. Was then scared it really was my heart. Apparently my doc thought 'maybe' as well or she wouldn't have ordered the stress test. I will do the stress test but in the meantime try the juices & exercises as described below plus research the Vagus nerve. On another note, I went off Omeprizole because I believe it was causing the pressure in my chest/sternum. Anyone else draw this conclusion? Both my doc and gastro doc said no....

I have been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia soon after my gallbladder removal last year. I wished they would have found and fixed it at the same time. This must be a common occurance because 5 people I know personally have it. I do have what feels like heart palpitations and sometimes have the feeling my heart skips beats. It happens mostly after I lay down to go to sleep and usually while laying on my left side. I plan to have the surgery to fix it later this year because my mother in law's had enlarged and filled her chest, crowding her heart and collapsing her lung. Somehow her stomach twisted and she had to undergo emergency surgery and they were unable to close the tear in her diaphram. She spent 6 months on a respirator before passing away. Her daughter has the same problem with it filling her chest, but is afraid of the surgery and won't have it. I don't want surgery, but I really don't want to end up in an emergency situation.

Hello, I have just come across this forum and website and it has been of great help.  I am in Australia, and four years ago I had a gastric sleeve for weight loss.  Have been diagnosed with bradycardia and heart murmur, reflux, hypertension controlled with medication.  Seven weeks ago I started to get dizzy spell, passed out at work and was found to have very high BP and double pulse rate.  This happened again last weekend, ended up in hospital for three days.  Cardiologist has me wearing a halter monitor at present.  I have wondered if the gastric sleeve may be linked with this, will mention to doctors re gastric issues....this would irritate the vagus nerve and create similar symptoms.  Thank you for posting this.

I am so glad I found this discussion I have felt so alone the last 4 weeks with pain every night feeling like I've been beaten up the day(s) following. I was diagnosed with HH after having my daughter (Feb 2015) it has been manageable but I have been sick everyday and have lost over 7st!

4 weeks ago I was spitting blood and ended up in A&E and was asked why I hadn't been prescribed anti sickness tablets!! (I was so upset as I have repeatedly told Drs, consultants and nurses I am sick everyday and to know they could help me and didn't)!

I can't find anything to eat that doesn't cause an attack now and have a 1 1/2 yr old and 4 yr old to look after! I feel drained and in need of any advice anyone can give me to ease my pain but eat to keep up with the kids! I'm 33 feeling 90 and don't know what to do!!
