Hiatus hernia and what food to eat

Last September I suddenly kept loosing my voice and bringing up food/liquid. I went to my doctors and he just put it down to acid reflux. He gave me two different tablets and neither worked.

In January I had a camera down my throat to look at my stomach and was then told that I have a hiatus hernia 2cm. I am only 25, non smoker and a healthy weight so they said its not very common for my profile. I think it may have been caused from a bungee jump I done three years ago.

From the moment I wake up I am constantly making this strange noise. Its a bit like the noise you make before your about to be sick. Lately my stomach is constantly burning and I feel sick. It lasts all day! I'm starting to feel really fed up of the whole thing. I try to avoid acid foods but nothing is helping and I haven't really found much on the net about meal ideas.

Can anyone recommend meal ideas (I'm a very plain eater which doesn't give me much choice!) and soft drinks that Dont aggravate my hernia?

Also is there anyone that has had the same symptoms and how did you geton with pregnancy? I'm hoping to plan for a baby next year. I don't want to take any tablets during pregnancy so want to get it under control as much as I can. I'm really worried though about it making my hernia worse. I'm already bringing up sick all the time so can't imagine how I would cope.

Hi emilyae, I've had a hiatus hernia for many years , and have had all the symptoms you have mentioned, I've recently had my gall bladder out and while waiting for op was told to go on a low fat / no fat diet and I noticed that most of symptoms i I've had for years started to subside and even after gall bladder removal, docs say you should stay on no fat / low fat cos you can still make stones , I had already decided to stay on this way of eating because my hernia felt so much better , I've also lost two stone which was a bonus , maybe give it a try , as I really do feel for you , you get to the point where you feel it's not worth eating because of the agony it leaves you with , I hope you find some relief soon , Chris x

Thanks for the reply. The trouble is, I get the symptoms from the moment I wake till bedtime. I wake up and straight away making this weird noise. The doctor put it down to my diaphragm being irritated from the hernia which causes this spasm. Before I've even eaten I am bringing up sick. Its so gross and annoying! When I'm on the train to work people give me strange looks thinking I'm going to be sick.

Hope you don't mind me asking but why did they remove your gall bladder? Was it to do with your hernia?

What foods do you find ok to eat? I'm not very creative for food so trying to find out what other people have. Thanks 😊 Emily

Hi Emily I was rushed into hospital with appendicitis, they had to cut me from belly button down to bottom of belly cos apparently it was such a mess they couldn't find appendix, while in there surgeon found my gall bladder was full of stones so had to go back In to have it removed, three month after that got a quite a big hernia on appendix scare , so had that repaired dec2014 but I think it might of popped out again at the bottom , sorry long explanation, food wise sound a bit like you I'm quite plain really , I do like salads ( I know boring) but I put chicken and other meats in it I only have a slice of bread a day , I use to find bread crippled me , I'll make deserts / dips with 0 %fat free Greek yogurt, I get the quark 0% fat free cheese you can add that to a lot of things , I also eat a lot of fruit, I know it doesn't sound very exciting but for me it seems to work , hope this helps Emily. Hi

your GP should give you anti reflux tablets to take every morning, like Omeprazole 20mg or similar. If you want something herbal I was recommended to try Centerium drops in a glass of water. You need to check first if they're ok to take during pregnancy and also, if you intend to breastfeed, for that period too.

Thanks for replying. I'm on lansoprazole and metoclopramide at the moment. I was on omeprazole but didn't work as well as I hoped. I've only just got the first two I mentioned yesterday so hopefully they will have more of an impact! Thanks for the recommendation, will give centerium a try 😊
