Hiatus hernia any advice ?

Hi, after having a baby in sept 13 I was experiencing lots of tummy ache, cramps, acid reflux, feeling sick, and just generally not feeling myself. I had a endoscopy in January 14 and was told I had a hiatus hernia. I was then put on omeprazole 20mg morning and night.

I have a good patch where it doesn't seem to bother me as much and then it changes to a bad few days. It's got to the point now where it's knocked my confidence in going out anywhere because of the way I feel. It's getting me really down as I have a baby and want to go out and do things. I just feel so scared and nervous to go out.

E.g I went out to tesco afew months ago to get a couple of bits, I had abit of tummy ache and felt abit nausea but I wasn't going to be long. Whilst I was in tesco with baby I suddenly felt unwell, I went red hot, shaky, sweaty, panicky and felt like I was going to be sick. I got held up at the till to which made me feel worse ( I just wanted to get out and home ) .

this has really knocked my confidence at going out because I always think it's going to happen again. Am thinking negative all the time that am going to be sick in public and embarrass myself infront of people. With having an 8 month old baby to its twice as hard.

My diet is very boring. I don't have anything spicy, fatty or to rich in flavour, I stick to plain stuff like potato, chicken fish fingers, veg, beans, that sort of thing. I don't have anything g fizzy, I have about 2 cups of tea a day but I drink a lot of water. I don't smoke or drink alcohol.

I take 20mg omeprazole everyday but I don't feel any different on them and I've been taking them since January when I had my endoscopy.

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like me. Or have any advice on anything I can do to reduce the symptoms.

Thank you

    Hi Sarah

I was told of my HH last year July, i had which i though was side effects from the Porton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) which i was prescribed Topzole. I also went through a bad patch on not wanting to go out etc. Feeling sick but i seem to clear my mind and that has helped to a certain extent. Sometimes ones body must just get use to the PPI. Just ensure you take a good multi-vitamin when takling PPIs. Try to relax and clear your head, Good Luck.

Hello Sarah, This must be very miserable for you.  I have had a hiatus hernis for many years,,,I find it hepful to raise the bed head a little (I use telephone books)...this keeps the tummy slightly raised when you are sleeping...Also I try not to eat within one and half hours before going to bed, then the stomach is clear before lying down...(I don't always stick to my own rules), but it generally helps. I find that certain foods I have to avoid completely, but you may be different...such foods as cheese or pickles etc.........could help...good luck......

Hi Mary, thank you for your reply much appreciated smile

When am having a bad day I do prop myself up in bed with a couple of pillows which does help, I know what you mean about eating late I don't always stick to it as I hate going to bed hungry. Am the same I have to stay away from onions, vinegar, and fizzy drinks, chocolate can also irritate it. I just need to narrow it right down to what I can eat and what I need to avoid completely.

      thank you for your advice.

This probably won't help you,  but something that worked for me was cutting down on cows milk....I only have skimmed milk in tea, but on cereals or with porridge I use rice milk (with added calcium)....it works for me, but may not be suitable for you...maybe worth a try though.

Hello all and Sarah I to have a HH for a little over 2.5 years now I'm afraid I do not have a lot to add I have food coming back on also hrs after I eat sometime up to 5 or 6 I burp up a chunk of something that perhaps I did not chew well enough I tried for a week to just eat soft foods IE mashers , peanutbutter yogurt that sort of thing and although it did help with the notorious chest pain that I can get daily sometimes

I was told just a week ago by a good friend in the medical industrie to try this stuff called PepZin GI to see if it would help with some of my symtoms I am to take it twice daily for 14 days ahhhh if only I could believe that it will somehow help even a bit

as I have tried practically ever supplement and natural cure out there and although some do I believe help like Ginger pills ,Turemic and a good multi vitamin with extra magnesuim and b12 on the side good luck chin up there will be good and bad days

but as long as there are some good

Hi, thank you for your reply smile

i don't have that problem with food coming back but I do burp a lot. It's the burning of my acid that I have mag or problems with, the burning up the gullet. My doctor changed my tabs yesterday to see if they help.

Thats a good thing to know incase I need to try other things. Let's hope they work for you and make a difference to your symptoms smile even if they improve your symptoms abit it's better than nothing isn't it. It's just a nightmare finding things that work.

thank you for your advice it's much appreciated and good luck to smile

    Hi.

I got very similar symptoms, even worse. Friends have even had breathing difficulties with Omeprazole. Y ou need to try various methods to control reflux. I switched to

Lanzoprasole which initially made me sick and dizzy whch I could tolerate then gave me bowel pain which I could not. I use Gaviscon as a back up. Ask about H2-receptor antagonists and Prokinetics. You may get lucky. I feel the drugs Companies and the NHS grossly understate the side effects of PPi's.

    Keep smiling.

      Hi Andrew

my doctor's trying me on esomeprazole at the moment, I started them yesterday. And he's give me ranitidine to take at night before bed. I also take gaviscon as a back up to. It's just trail and error really trying to find something that works because I can't go on the way I am sad it's so hard.

thank you for your reply and advice smile
