Hiatus hernia causing me all this grief?

Posted , 4 users are following.

I have had this hernia for a while now, even had barrets witch have healed according to the doctors.I take omeprazole 20mg a day.i am 33 years old male and in relative good shape as i do go the gym often, but is now getting increasingly hard.I have had my heart and lungs checked and all is well.

Here is my only and main concern as all the rest i can deal with.It is being out of breath easily, even if i just walk a flight of stairs i need to catch my breath and then my breathing feels completly out of sink,i start to get dizzy and so on.only when i am still is when i have some relief, and this has had me in all kinds of panic as i thought i might have heart problems like angina and what not.The doctor assures me its not my heart witch i do not think it is.

So it boils down to this...does anybody experience this fatigue from exersion.i had a endo scopy and the surgeon said my hernia is not a big deal, but my bottom part of my stomach is inflamed.I believe he was not accurate by downplaying my hernia like that,as for when i have these speels and i press my sternum i get a little relief. But if i have to sprint a 100 meters now i am afraid i will die,no joke.

    Hi Krista,

You need to look at the problems a hiatus hernia can cause to the vagus nerve! This is a nerve that runs behind your stomach and has a large branch near to the oesopogeal junction, where the hiatus hernia usually sits. It can cause all kinds of symptoms from palpitations, to dead arms and neck and jaw pains.

As for your tiredness - that could be a side effect from your medications, I tried a couple of PPI's - both gave me cramp and fatigue.

Did you talk to a surgeon about having a fundoplication? or did you just see a gastroenterologist? Surgeons don't normally say that your hernia isn't a big deal until they have done manometry and ph testing - and I don't think that the fact you have had barretts would be taken so lightly either! Do you still have other appointments to go to? If not I would be going back to the doctor and asking for a second opinion!

    Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply.I have been to countless doctors and they do not all seem very clued up to what is going on.One doctor told me a new study now suggsets that barrets its not such a big deal as what it was previously thought to be.And some of them thought brethlessness had nothing to to with GERD,but it turns out it has.I am going for a heart sonar and chest xray again to to make sure its nothing there. But i read here on these forums of a guy who had a hernia like mine and had the same out of breath problems, and finaaly after years he got to the bottom of the problem witch turn out to be the inflamation and swelling in the stomach area was restrickting the heart or the blood flow to the heart, witch sounds like it could be the same for me.Anyway i am trying to keep it together as this has been 5 years now,but i have yet again got a new doctor,so hopefully something can get done.

It's a sad reflection of the way things are nowadays - but he who shouts loudest gets something done! Next time you get an appointment write down all the things you want to ask and maybe research what ideally you would want to get from your treatment - that way you are taking control of your health, and you will feel a lot more positive.

I too had the breathing issues with my hiatal hernia. My doctor told me the hernia presses on the heart and lungs causing the chest pains and getting out of breath. I am 5 weeks past my second surgery for the hernia and I am feeling much better. I had surgery Feb. 2014, that surgery came undone. I had it redone this Feb. and the doctor said my left lung was attached to my esophagus and had to pull it off and repair the lung. After 9 days I ended up with pneumonia and was back in the hospital, so that set me back a couple weeks. I am now feeling alot better and I am off the heartburn meds too.
