Hiatus hernia- HELP

Hello

I am desperate for some advice on behalf of my boyfriend!!

He was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia in 2010 (although he had it a lot longer)

It really it bad in 2011 and he was prescribed omeprezole - it didn't work and he ended up with a lot of side effects. He now has been moved onto zoton fasttab (30mg) he has been on it for a few months now and it's literally like taking tictacs!! Sometimes it doesn't hurt much, other times he is in agony! He takes them everyday and is still having side effects. They wouldn't be so bad if they worked!!

It's really affecting his life and we know there's an operation to correct it. The dr said ya a last resort as its risky though? Does any have any knowledge on this as he can't carry on how he is!

Also, he constantly has acid on his chest, he belches constantly because of the feeling/pain- what I am worried about is that it might be destroying the lining of his osophegus and will leave him at greater risk of cancer?

I am so sorry for him he's sotough but is in particular agony tonight-Even though he took double dosage. what can we do?

Hi, I have had an Hiatus Hernia for many years which didnt bother me that much. But about 2 years ago it started causing me a lot of trouble. Pain, reflux, bouts of nausia that would last for days. I couldnt eat anything and in about 3 months I dropped 2 dress sizes. My GP was next to useless.

I researched on line and now have changed many things in my diet. And its worked.

I now only ever have rice milk. I dont eat bread only rice cakes and cut out things that I know can cause me trouble, like spicey foods and cheese, ( I LOVE cheese)

It was hard at first but I love my rice cakes now, and its really worked for me. I no longer take any meds for indigestion I was on daily Omeprazole then Lansoprazole, terrible things. Now, if I'm 'naughty' and eat something I know may effect me I just take a swig of Gavascon.

Please tell him to try this it really worked for me. Sadly though I've put the weight back on ,lol

sad I can totally emphasise with your boyfriend, the pain can be extreme. I have recently been diagnosed with sliding hiatus hernia after an endoscopy, had constant pain for months. I take 30mg of Lansoperazole twice a day and gaviscon in between times. Am drinking more milk than I have ever done as it is soothing for the throat, I feel like I've swallowed a medicine ball and have constant discomfort in the throat, swallowing food is difficult I have been told to eat 5-6 times a day small amounts and nothing after 6pm. Try changing his diet, websites are available for foods to avoid which make acid reflux worse. I am also going to look in to Aloe Vera drinks from health food shops as aloe is a natural healer, will try anything to relieve pain. Also aiming to lose some weight as this should also help, ( lost half a stone already as I cannot eat as much). Tilt bed up at head or sleep with more pillows. If pain carries on go back to doctor. Best of luck .

Most dairy food, that includes cows milk, is a big NO-NO when you are suffering with an Hiatus Hernia, try rice milk or soya milk, I'm sure it will help you.

I was on lansoperazole for many years, I now only take it if I've been careless and eaten something I know I shouldnt.

Thanks for that have tried soya in the past, its pretty disgusting will try rice milk though. What are the other major foods to avoid in your experience, anything I'm eating at present is giving me pain, it gets you down after a while, trying to be positive but its hard. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Hi chicagogirl, I agree with you about the soya milk its definately an aquired taste, lol

The rice milk I use dosent have a taste really, its not creamy like cows milk so when using it to make a cuppa you dont need the tea to be too strong. I've got used to it now. You may need to try several makes as they dont all taste the same, some I didnt like at all.

When I was really suffering I decided to be very strict with myself, so for about 2 months I ate nothing but rice cakes with low fat spread for beakfast, the same for lunch and for my evening meal I had either fish or chicken with rice and steamed veg. I drink 2-3 pints of water a day and fruit if I feel 'peckish' Not very exciting I have to admit, but it didnt take me long to get used to it, and I did lose weight, which for me wasnt a bad thing, lol

I felt so much better, and after about 2 months I started to gradually go back to eating my usual diet. At the moment I eat most things but keep away from white bread, tomatos, spicey food, cheese and most dairy. I still have have rice cakes instead of bread but I'm not too strict and will eat some of my 'forbidden' foods if eating out. I believe that being strict for that 2 months gave my stomach a rest, It worked for me anyway and its worth a try.

Thanks so much for that, I'll give it a try, for someone who loves food its hard!!! I'm not massively over weight but losing a stone wouldn't do me any harm!!!!

Do you want a laugh?? I named myself 'Chicagogirl' as Chicago is known as the windy city, sums up my present predicament!!!!!lol
