Hiatus Hernia - Morning Pain

Can anybody advise when I get up and start to make the bed or walk around, pain and burning start and I have to sit for 30 or so minutes, antacids don't help. If I take it easy for hour, I am good for the rest of the day, till night time when pain usually starts again

Hi Keith I have learnt not to do anything for the first hour when wakening except take my med and have light breakfast, then I will go back and do the bed and shower and any chores . Maybe look at your meds might need changing evening one if you take any at bedtime

As you are aware bending over can start the acid coming up. I am on lansoprazole 30 mg and if I forget to take it for a day I get the burning and pain. I got a hiatus hernia and a dismotility problem and waiting to see a gastro Dr. I have had a barium swallow and an endoscopy. Have you had any scans done. Probably the hernia can get worse over the years. I have had mine for over 20 years but was told mine is small but it still plays up with severe chest pain.

What side effects did you have with the omeprazole? Perhaps you should go back to your GP.

Omeprazole side effects that bothered me were drowsiness, really bad constipation and headaches.

Actually I am not on Zantac. but what the local pharmacy had cimetidine, not very good compared to ranitidine.

As for seeing a doctor, read my previous post "Acid/Bile Reflux -Hiatus Hernia". Nothing has changed except I did not try the medication for bile reflux.

I know lansoprazole causes constipation, I suffer from this too. There are lots of side effects with these types of meds but if I stop them I get terrible heartburn.

Hope you sort it out soon.

For heartburn, ginger takes some beating. In Thailand ginger root is widely used for cooking, For the last fortnight I put 2 Kilos through a blender and make about a litre of juice, I add an apple to soften the taste. Very effective and gives a warm feeling through to your stomach. You can buy ginger tea which helps. You can also add ginger root to meals.

Thank you for the tips, I think I will try the ginger tea. I would like to come off the meds altogether, I have been on them for over 10 years and read you should not be on them long term. I have tried Gaviscon but they don't stop the acid for me.

Th,e ginger tea helps but its not strong enough, try and get the root. Before I made the juice I used to chew the root. I think some of us have bile and acid reflux and the normal medications and antacids are not that effective. I am a atypical case for bile relux.
