hiatus hernia op

Hi,

I have been diagnosed with hiatus hernia and up until a year ago it was managed badly with drugs. For the last year I have had horrendous pain, chest, shoulders, back etc. I also feel bloated and very unwell a lot of the time. GPs have been fobing me off and I went for a lung scan, which was normal, the pain I was getting I thought I must have cancer. The results were clear but it mentioned that over third of my stomach was in my abdomen.

The GP is not interested and feels that I do not need an op so I am thinking of going private. Can anybody give me their experiences of a private operation. Are you allowed to say which clinic you used.

I think you should go back and demand that you get this seen to. These HHs are nothing but a nusiance and your GP needs to see that it is really getting you down. Go Back. Insist. Good Luck

Hi, not sure what your situation is at present but wanted to suggest the hernia website called heriabible. It was set up "I think" to give an alternative to an operation even though that would only apply to a small number of people. It is worth having a look and reading the different methods of surgery as many people have given their opinions. In London there are quite a few "hernia clinics" but am not sure where you are located. As far as I know you have to get a referral from your GP and then you can choose your consultant and hospital. The prices vary considerably and the more you see the consultant the more you pay. Most of these consultants work for the NHS but there would be a long waiting time - I would think. Best of luck

Had surgery and after a first week from hell I am now on the mend. Still can not eat solids but at least the pain is tolerable and the feeling sick has gone away as long as I don't take pain meds. Fingers crossed that things continue to get better but no reflux and now a silent prayer that the Barrett's will not get worse, the reason I had this surgery. It was my last hope. I'm still recovering but fingers crossed this will be the cure that I have been waiting for for the last sixteen years.

Hi, glad to hear you are very likely to be on the mend. Your diet is very important while you are recovering. There is a lot of information on Herniabible from people who have had the operation and have posted information about making life easier as you recover. Many suggest that the painkillers which are normally codine cause constipation which is the last thing you want, also presumably it may put a strain on your hernia area. Also there is information about when to start moving round/exercising etc. obviously depends on how you feel. Also if you have any worries about pain etc there is so much info about what men experience afterwards that it may help. Hope you get better quickly.

Getting better day after day. Now just hoping to someday be able to eat solid food again. Right now even mashed potatoes seem to get stuck at entry to the stomach and only go down with a lot of water and time....anyone else have this problem?

Your condition is pretty normal UKSteph, if it doesn't ease up with use they'll send you for what's called Balloon Dilation and give the area a stretch smile

Thanks House appreciate it. Its been a rough couple of weeks, just hoping things get better. I never did get to see my surgeon after the surgery so no advice given at all which was a bit rubbish...okay a lot rubbish. Don't see him until the 30th of May so fingers crossed either I can start to swallow food properly by then or he can help with what you have suggested. Thank you again.
