Hiatus hernia operation

Hello

I was diagnosed in feb with a hiatus hernia I had an endoscopy and also the ph test!!

Me and my consultant made a choice and have gone for the operation just wondering how the recovery is and how people have found it

Feeling a bit scared if honest but looking forward to being free from this condition and all the horrible side effects

I was due to have another endoscopy yesterday with a view to having the operation. I cancelled due to reading too much on the net. I do want to have the operation but I can't do without my ppi's to have the ph test as I am in agony after only a few hours. Please get back after your op and let us know how it goes. Wish I was brave enough. Hope all goes well for you . Good luck...

Hi Margaret I was scared when I had the test and stopped my tablets I was just on gaviscon! There are two types of that test one with and one without your tablets could you maybe not have the one where you still take them? I too am scared but feeling postive from the comments I got on here x

Hi braker 87. The consultant didn't mention I could still take tablets. He said I had to stop for 2 weeks before I got the ph test. That is not an option for me. I'm on 40mg rabeprazole a day and been on that for at least 6 years. Gaviscon does not work at all for me. I would like to have the op so I don't have to be dependent on tablets for the rest of my life. Good luck with your operation. Wishing you a speedy recovery x

Hi Margaret. You can have a ph impedance test done. That measures everything coming out of your stomach and is designed for people who cannot tolerate being off ppis. I've recently had one and thought I wouldn't manage without the tablets but you can take h2 antagonists like ranitidine etc til 3 days before the test. I has the impedance test done just incase I couldn't bear to be without the ppis but the ranitidine, domperidone and gaviscon advance really took the edge off.

I would ask about ph impedance testing as it may be the way forward for you. I'm now waiting for an appointment with the surgeon with a view to my surgery. I can't wait to be off the tablets!

I had a hiatus hernia and a reflux operation in 1999, after years of being sick every day because of the acid pain and taking Losec and Omazerapole, it stopped working and I was being sick in my sleep, which was frightening. I was sent to see a Proffessor in Harley Street, he did a 24 hour pressure test (he devised this test)on my stomach and he found that the sphincter musccle to the stomach was open all the time, so every time I laid down the contents in the stomach would flow back up. I had the keyhole op and I was kept in hospital for three days. Only pain in hospital was wind pain between the shoulder blades, that was caused by the air they pump into the stomach area in order to give them room to operate. The op I had meant that hiatus which was through the diaphragm was pulled down and part of that was wrapped around the oseophacus to make a new sphincter muscle and stapled. After the op I was given morphine for a day or so. For a few months after the op I could only eat small quantities of food at a time as the stomach was a bit smaller. It got easier after a little while and I now eat normally. I have not been sick once since the op, not once. I dont get any acid/ heart burn at all now or the pain which is likened to a heart attack episode. Best op ever.

We will all be thinking of you and sending positive thought, mine has been a long drawn out process to eventually get to the stage of now meeting surgeon for op over 3 years of having test after test 3  endoscopies and ph test  in June. My problem was consultants too booked up and had to wait 10 months after last endoscopy for results.Just think positive.

Good that your consultant offered you the op! I have a second opinion appointment as my original consultation was not helpful! Not listened too - and the guy was trying to put me back on meds I'd had a bad experience with! PPI's don't agree with me very well - doc put me on Ranitidine 300mg twice a day - not as long lasting as PPI - but fingers crossed this time I can have an op!
