hiatus hernia operation

Posted , 10 users are following.

Hi I am 27 years ols and have had my hernia for 15+ years. After years of pushing I have finally been offered the operation to repair it. I have had many scopes, ultrasound and barium xrays.

I have been given a date of 9th of april and would like to know peoples experiences of this.

How long were you off work?

how long you felt pain for?

How/what did you eat?

How long were you in hospital?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Amanda. I am on a surgeons list for the keyhole op, and have a consultation with him on Friday. I hope someone answers your questions as I am undecided about the operation .  Please let me know how you are.  I have had my hernia for at least 15 years and like you have had lots of tests.  I am 65 have had projectile vomiting for years and now have no appetite but keeping my weight stable by eating puddings and  cakes !   I wish you well

Ho elvis1949 which hospital would you be getting it done at? My consultant told me that alot of surgeons do it too tight so you get complications after but if it is done well the relief is very good.

I'm going for my laproscopic fundoplication tomorrow afternoon. Supposed to be day surgery - and I'm hoping to be off no more than 3 weeks - depends on how it goes. I have made clear soups, got jelly and custard for the first few days as well as breakfast shakes with added fibre vits and minerals. I'm not having a full nissen - but a 270 - which my surgeon says does the job without as many problems.

      Hi Amanda,

Have gone through my op now, was in hospital for a night, had a complication that was sorted, but meant I stayed in for obs, grateful of it though, as the shoulder pain was awful. When people on here say walking helps - it really does, but it took a couple of doses of pain killers to get to the stage where I could walk with it. Having said that by morning, I was eating sloppy food and fit enough to come home. The toupet is much less troublesome than a nissen - and so far I've noticed 2 key things, my nose isn't running (always blocked first thing) and my mouth feels much fresher (metallic taste gone). I haven't taken any meds for my stomach since Thursday - and I haven't missed them! It's very early days - and I tire very easily, but I'm glad I decided to go down this route.

Hi glennie, I have heard about shoulder pain from the gas I will keep that in mind thankyou. What is the difference between the 2 techniques? I dont know a great deal about it. Glad you are recovering well.

      Hi Amanda,

Toupet is a 270 wrap as opposed to 360 - so it's not as tight and should lead to less problems swallowing. It means you go to a sloppy diet more or less straight away - as with the nissen it's liquids only for a couple of weeks. I am taking 3 weeks off - I do not have a very physical job, but the general anesthetic and pain meds you may be on afterwards do not make it easy to concentrate! You can't drive for a week or so either! I did have a complication - so I will be seeing what my doctor advises in a weeks time.

      Hi Glennie

I'm having the same as you due to a weak oesophagus hope I don't still have the feeling of food stuck in the throat I sometimes think it's worse than having the acid.

      Hi Ian,

Having a feeling of food stuck was not one of my issues, I constantly had a runny nose, sore throat and cough. It's all gone. One of the first things I did find I could do straight after the op, was belch - although it can take a little time to come through. I am too scared to eat anything but sloppy foods right now, but I have had no issues so far. I can tell when I am getting full (don't over eat!) as my shoulders start to ache - but I've cut down to taking pain killers just twice a day. I'm now eating about 6-8 small meals a day - and drinking in between meals as my stomach needs time to re-adjust. I hope you are taking at least 2 weeks off work, as you will need it - I'm only a few days out of my op - but I have been sleeping a lot, and I find I need to rest every time I eat. Worst thing for me - I don't relax easily - and I am having to! Hope all goes well for you - and be prepared for the shoulder pain - it's not good for a few hours - but it gets better - promise!!!

Thank you Glennie for the great detail you have reassured me about the operation, like you I get a stuffed nose and have to use a nasal spray every night to sleep I also cough and am almost sick when brushing my teeth I didn't realise having a stuffy nose is part of the condition until you wrote that I've told my doctor he just recommend nasal spray. I'm so glad your feeling better keep me updated. Work have been good with me having time off which I was worried about as I work in the steel industry the chances are I will need more time off to recover it would be silly to go back early and do some damage. I hope you keep feeling better every day.
