hiatus hernia operation

Posted , 10 users are following.

Hi I am 27 years ols and have had my hernia for 15+ years. After years of pushing I have finally been offered the operation to repair it. I have had many scopes, ultrasound and barium xrays.

I have been given a date of 9th of april and would like to know peoples experiences of this.

How long were you off work?

how long you felt pain for?

How/what did you eat?

How long were you in hospital?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi guys. Went for surgery at 8.30ish. Lasted about 1 and half hours. I didnt wake up from the anaesthetic very well so gpt put in critical care till 4pm. But managed some tea a yoghurt. I have had the 270 wrap. The information I have been given is very poor, only advice on food is liquid for 6 weeks!! No thicker than a runny yoghurt.

Hi Amanda the worst part is over now just rest and get better am glad the operation went well except for the anesthetic issue.

Are you able to burp as you didn't have the full wrap?

Look after yourself make sure everyone runs round you.

Hi, yes I can burp a little. I have staples in my incisions and belly button. The ones in my belly button are very uncomfortable. I think thats where the majorty of pain is coming from. Its feels stretched and alot of pressure. Codeine arnt helping at all. Im also very bloated which is making it difficult to put trousers on.

I hope the symptoms ease for you Amanda, I am glad you can burp so wind can escape both directions 😊 are you home yet?

I havnt been too windy tbh. Yes I came home the day of the op. I didnt want to stay in. I would rather lay in my own bed than a hospital one. I find the more I stay still the more it hurts so im trying to keep moving a bit.

      Hi Amanda!

Glad you got through it! I have a 270 wrap too. I was able to eat sloppy foods from the day after the op. I can still belch but you do get more wind down below! Ouch -they stapled you! I just had steri strips covered with large plasters. You were under a little less time than me, my op lasted 2 and a half hours, but that was probably due to them fixing my spleen too! I should've been day surgery too, but they wouldn't let me go without obs! The codeine will help in time. I was told to take 2 with 2 paracetamol and that knocked me out. I still take 1 occasionally with 2 paracetamol when I get residual pain. I was off just over 3 weeks and am back at work now. I can't lift anything heavy - but I have an admin job so it's not really required!

Get well soon and hope them shoulders aren't giving you too much pain! It gets better!

I get a bit of pain in my right shoulder on and off. Ive eaten yoghurt and soup so far. I Couldnt have paracetamol tablets as my surgeon wouldnt allow me to swallow them. I have been and got ibuprofen melts and calpol. I took 1 codeine, 1 ibupfrofen and half dose of calpol and feel much better. The staples in my belly button are the main problem. Im trying to keep moving. Imim patience thats my issue, I only had it done yesterday and already bored lol. Glad you are well and back at work.

I was given a pill crusher in hospital so I could take paracetamol, tastes awful but it works and iam still using it for large tablets. Just thought they let me eat weetabix with lots of milk after my op - if left to soften it's very liquid and easy to swallow, but it's also quite satisfying. You should be ok with very sloppy mashed potato and gravy too -you basically have to make everything as liquid as you can, but it can be tasty too. And custard is good too!

I thought about crushing them but my tadte is very sensitive and bork easy which I dont want to risk. Hence the calpol, it dosent taste great but I can cope. I was thinking of making rice pudding and adding extra milk and blending it tomorrow. Got some ice cream aswell. I was given soup the yoghurt after op. Im finding swallowing easy just get full on about 50ml of soup/yoghurt. I was going to go back to work after 2 weeks but been told its a no no so been given 4 week sick note. My job is active and involves alot of lifting.

You will need all of that time. With Easter time i was only 2 days off having 4 weeks myself! Ambrosia creamed rice will be ok - I got that and their custard pots, little fromage frais pots are good too - and I did and still am getting my main household shop online and delivered. I have a very lovely and helpful husband - but my house would have been full of pork pies and chocolate if I left it up to him.

I dont really like tinned rice pudding or custard after I have made my own lol. Double cream and vanilla pods all the way hahaha. My parter had been good bless him, dont think he signed up for all this, having to dress me, help me in the bath/bed and look after the animals. Im trying to do things myself. I went shopping with him tonight for yoghurts, he bought gammon joint, duck, tiger bread, cheese and beef jerky! Not helpful to me Lol. he goes back to work monday after I go for an exam which is a 130 mile round trip! So I need to be quick doing stuff for myself.

That's the frustrating thing - you can't do much. For me not driving was the hardest part - the nearest shop is 5 miles away - hence online shopping! Once I could drive again it was great - but you can't carry any heavy bags, so I'd just pop out for little things. I found I didn't want to go far - and needed nana naps in the afternoon.

Hi guys, quick question. Howsoon did you start doing normal activities? I will be post 1 week tomorrow but already driving, hoovering, cleaning bending to do cats litter trays/ food and have been since 3 days post op.

I seem to be able to drink more past 2 days to start with I could only manage 50ml ish at a time.

      Hi Amanda,

I was doing more or less the same at 1 week - although I made sure I didn't lift anything heavy, just pushed things around. You won't be at full swelling inside yet though - I found at around 2 weeks I had my worst residual pain - I even went to docs as my back was quite bad, so do be careful! Don't try to do too much too soon is what I'm trying to say. And don't be hoying cat litter bags around - they weigh a lot! I know as I have cats myself!

Hahaha no I refrained from carry the cat litter bag! I started driving 3 days ago aswell as I stopped the pain medication, it wasnt working anyway. I cleaned for around 3 hours the other day moving sofa's around and on my hands and knees doing the bath room floor and crounched over cleaning the bath. My body ached as soon as I Stopped so I knew I had done too much that day. My partner is back from work for a few days now so will try take it a bit easier.

Yes you have to rest and let your other half do something for you! You will find that work, when you go back, will exhaust you! I've been back a week and am finding it hard! Rest as much as you can when you can!
