Hi I have had small sliding hernia and take Omprezole 20mg a day. Had to go to A and E today as had chest heaviness and pain and short of breath. Heart and bloods all okay. Had pain before but not short of breath.

Does anyone else get short of breath with hernia. Anything that can help ?

I have a raised bed, watch what I eat.

Is there a possibility to remove the hernias. They are dangerous and can cause serious side effects. The hernia protrudes between the diaphragm and stomach. Can cause GERD. THERE IS TREATMENT, have you tried to calm down your diet non spicy foods and small meals.

Its deffinately miserable and mabe time to bite the bullet and have it treated or removed. Hope ur bettter soon.

Hi thanks for taking time to reply. yes I avoid lots of foods and try not to eat big meals. Doctor seems very reluctant to do surgery. Was told when I was first diagnosed that they used to just do surgery now they just treat with drugs. My GP always seem to just tell me to up the dosage of Omprezole when I am feeling bad. And take Gaviscon.

Do u sleep with u head higher than your knees and don't eat after 9pm.

not sure how long you have had this condition. Be sure to take meds and also scope the throats yearly.

I've been suffering from shortness of breath since October.  I know that it's food related because I suffered from this on and off over the years when something didn't agree with me, but it was always gone within a day or two.   I still have it after all these months.  I've been to the doctor as well and he gave me omeprazole (Prilosec) which did nothing.  As a matter of fact, I think I need more gas, not less which is what omeprazole does.  Though not sure if I have a hiatal hernia, I did some research and based on the research went to a chiropractor.  This helped tremendously.  But, it still comes back when I have tomato sauce or anything spicy.   I do get panicky about the shortness of breath, however,  It actually feels like I can't catch my breath.  Is that what you feel?  And I have a burning sensation in the middle of my chest.  Sometimes this lasts for days too.

I have been taking Omeprozole for years. It helps with the refux. But about a year ago I started having trouble breathing. I flew from Albuquerque to Detroit last February and thought I was going to die getting thru the airports. After I got home I went to the ER. They told me then it was my hiatal hernia pressing against my diaphragm. So I go to my doctor and she sends me to heart doctor and pulmonary doctor who prescribed me three inhalers and a nebulizer. These did not help at all. So after many tests he decided it is my hiatal hernia. I can barely walk thru the house without losing my breath. Doing any house work and going to the store is debilitating. So he finally sent me to a surgeon. After more tests he agreed I have a large hernia. I go for surgery on Jan 29th. I also developed insomnia in the last 11 month so I am also exhausted all the time. My husband has been wonderful on taking care of the house, shopping and cooking. I so can’t wait for the surgery and hoping it works.

When you talk you about having trouble breathing,Are you having excessive psi (gas) building up in your sternum and chest when issue happens?

I know this is a few years ago. But I would love to know how the surgery went. Maybe it is my methods, but it is so hard to find first hand information about hiatal hernias and surgery results. And I don't think testimony on doctor sites is the right place to get info.

I am having the same symptoms and I'm trying to get diagnosed I've been on protonix for about 2 years I have become very short of breath I can't lay flat on my back and I can't walk a long distance without feeling like I'm going to collapse today I could not undergo an MRI because of laying on my back this really concerns me I am also going to get an EDG done and going to the pulmonologist would love to hear back from you to see if it helped

Hi Leah, I'm sorry to hear what you're going through. Please keep the forum updated on your experience in getting to the bottom of this.

I am dreading summer. I don't have a hiatus hernia but GERD, my breathing becomes difficult in the summer.

Smaller meals, but more frequent helps. So does not worrying when the shortness of breath strikes. Maybe an inhaler might help, I'm not sure, I try not to use my inhaler.

I've been using an inhaler, doesn't help. I did pulmonary function test today scored a little low she v said I may need an inhaler. Lol going for another MRI on Wednesday I hope I can do it laying flat on my back. Thursday I have an EDG on Thursday. I watched a video from the Mayo Clinic the other day and he said that these protein pump inhibitors were not good for you that your body needed the acids and they actually can cause cancer. Been having a lot of neck and back pain thought I might try going to the chiropractor as well I just had a lumbar fusion though and I've been having a lot of post-op twitching as well what started out as one problem.. has ended up in multiple. I just don't understand it. I will keep you Updated the shortness of breath scares the crap out of me I physically have to get out of my car and stand up it gets so bad been eating a lot of times too

I'm in my 20's and because I don't have something like Barrett's, I have no desire to be on PPI's, I'd much rather at worse take a 15mg Lanzoprazole if I ever have to be on PPI's.

It's around 13 degrees celsius in UK right now...I'm not having breathing problems often but was at a hot restaurant and I had a bit of shortness of breath. What helps me a little is not trying to tense against nor force- breathe my way through it. Just try and relax through it and emphasise more diaphragmic breathing as opposed to chest-breathing (chest moving more when breathing is not the right way to breathe).

I created a log detailing me comming off PPI's.

What gastro-oesophagal problems did the doctor/endoscopy say you have?
