Hiatus hernia symptoms back!

Posted , 6 users are following.

Had a bad bout this past spring, and got constant coughing and sticky feeling in my throat gone.  Now coughing for the last month, poor appetite and constant swallowing and throat clearing.  But oddly not at night. Any thoughts on what sets HH recurrence after it has lays low for a while?  Go to a gastro specialist end of March.  Been waiting 8 MONTHS.  What should I be sure to tell him?  Need to get my ducks in a row....

The symptoms aren't of a hiatus hernia per se but of the reflux the hernia facilitates.

Unless you had a hernia repair operation, you've probably had it all along. It prevents proper closure of the lower oeosphageal sphincter permitting reflux from the stomach into the oesophagus. If this reflux travels full column, it may breach the upper oesophageal sphincter as well whence it may aspirate into the respiratory system where it's responsible for triggering the throat symptoms and cough you describe.

Go to the www DownWithAcid org uk site and scroll down the contents (home) page to find the chapter on extra-oesophageal reflux.

Be sure to inform your doctor of all of your symptoms.   Yesterday was a relatively good day for me, with one exception.   I ate some canned peaches in the morning and had no problem.   However, later on I ate a few more- and for some reason, they didn't stay down.   So, once again--- I got dismayed (which happens everytime I throw up.)   But, for supper last night I actually ate some meat loaf, mashed potatoes, and creamed corn!   Yeah!   A small accomplishment for once!!!    I was so happy about it-- could have cried tears of joy!!!    But I don't want to get too thrilled- am sure that I am not "over the hump" yet!!!

    Hello Cass

One thing that can cause haital hernia to act up is diet, large meals, fried foods, coffee, spicy foods, fats, chocolate and pepperment, also weight gain.

Tell the doctor just what is happening. He will probably want to do an endoscopy to see for himself. I have suffered with this for years, I go for surgery this month.

    The best to you.

I have this all of the time.  Constant feeling of something stuck in my throat and having to cough and clear my throat.  I have had it for 2 years with no relief.  I am just learning to live with it, but it is a terrible situation.  My consultant says I have to live with it!!

I suggest you see another doctor, I don't think you should have to live with that, it is possible for help. Do you have acid feflux, and also haital hernia?

I pray you get some help.

Gee- I hope that you don't have to learn to "live with it."   There should be something available that can be of help to you.   Explore everything, if I were you.   Seek more help- for sure!    I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers!

You don't have to learn to live with it. There may not be any drugs to combat extra-oesophageal reflux whose symptoms you describe but lifestyle revison may help. If not, there is reflux reduction surgery.

see the section on Reflux in the www DownWithAcid org uk book.
