Hiccups

in the past couple of weeks my partner has been getting hiccups whilst asleep. he is not aware of them but they are wakening me up. It's normally just one hiccup at a time but sometimes there are two in a row. they seem to come on when he turns over or moves. anyone any ideas what is going on. I'm a worrier and thinking the worst about it. should he be seeing a GP?

thanks for your help.

I think you're worrying a bit too much about this, particularly if he's only doing it two or three times in a row. He may be eating or drinking too late at night, which is a common cause of sleep hiccups. It could also be something he's eating or drinking that doesn't agree with him.

Maybe try keeping a diary for a few weeks to see which nights it happens on - i.e. what time he ate, and what kinds of food and drink he had before going to bed. You also don't say whether he has any other symptoms, like indigestion or acid reflux. (This causes central chest pain which is severe enough to wake the person, but can also cause hiccups).

Speaking as an ex-nurse, I don't think you need to worry unless this gets markedly worse or he develops any other symptoms. Frankly, unless you live somewhere like the US and have very expensive insurance, I don't think any doctor would be very interested in these symptoms. I certainly can't imagine a doctor in the UK (or most European countries) would waste resources on ordering specialised examinations. All they'd do is ask about any other symptoms, reassure him and tell him to come back if it gets worse.

hi. thanks for your response. i think I'm worrying because in 25 years this hasn't happened and now it is. Although its only one/two hiccups at a time it is all through the night and happens every time he turns over. no other symptoms that I'm aware of but will try keeping a diary and see how that goes. thanks again for taking the time to respond.
