Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Hey so I'm a little scared. I might be just stressing out but I have had this open cyst like thing in the crease of my groin for a few months now and it just will not heal! If I keep it dry it starts to heal but I'm a pretty big guy and it's summer so I get pretty sweaty down there and just stays open. Does this sound like Hidradenitis Suppurativa

    Hi Jay

Was it a lump before it opened up? Plus do you just have one or more than one?

I have been looking into it and I just keep getting lead to either and ingrown hair or hs

I went to the hospital years ago & they said mine was an ingrowing hair, but it wasn't. I think the main difference as I've had both, is that there is a pin prick hole in the middle of it before it's an open wound, whereas there isn't with HS. The best things to try & make it heal is to use dermol wash instead of shower gel or soap in that area & wear cotton loose fitting underwear. Tropical lotion works on some people but it doesn't on me. I have got an open cyst at the moment & some not open ones & I've just been put back on doxycycline antibiotics which work for me, but you can't go out in the sun while you're on them or you burn straight away. If it doesn't heal up within the next few weeks go to your GP's & ask to see a skin specialist, there is one at my GP's plus I have also been under a consultant dermatologist at the hospital

Hey Helen what was your first one like and how has it progressed does it really look like the photos online or is that just extreme cases

    Hi Jay,

Is this your first cyst in that area of your body? Have you had cysts previously in your armpits or chest area?

Hey its my first cyst in that area (the crease in my groin)I have had so cyst in between my legs but let's just say that area isn't sweaty and it actually allows them to heal as to where in this area it is always warm and often sweaty as I am a hard worker at my job

I understand that is a difficult place to keep dry. I would suggest cleaning the area with Hibiclens. There is a product called manuka honey that is great at fast healing of the trouble areas such as the groin, buttocks and even arm pit. If it is HS closing the area may cause it to swell back up until drained again. HS typically tunnels and reoccurs. That area is susceptible to cellulitis. Please watch for fevers or swelling and warmth around the cyst.

I just really stressing out that this could be hs what do you think the wound never fully healed as it reopens everyday because of the warm area and movement. And to answer the question from before I have had any of these anywhere else like in my arm pits and chest. I don't even get pimples on my face besides from shaving

Its hard to determine HS with this being the only one in that area. It is not uncommon for it to be your normal type of cyst in that area with friction and sweating. I wouldn't stress out to much about it at this point. Just keep it clean (wash 2-3 times a day) wear loose clothes cotton seems to work best. Follow up with your PCP or derm if you don't see healing soon. You may need an antibiotic.

How would I know it's hs it doesn't look like any of the pictures I've seen by the ones I have look like they have progressed

Try not to worry about it that much. Keep the area dry and avoid any friction. Wear cotton underwear. Others on here has offered some ideas on what to put on it. You'll want to see a doctor soon if it doesn't heal. Hopefully I'll heal soon.

So i went to the doctors today she said it was just a cyst from sweating and now that it burst open it won't heal because of the wetness and such she gave me cream and antibiotics

Hopefully she's right & the cream & antibiotics work & you don't get anymore! The doctor said they didn't know what mine was in the first instance & hospital said it was an ingrowning hair when I first went. Plus I've just seen your question the other day about is it as bad as in the photos on a google search & no mine doesn't look as bad as that but the pain is the worst thing

See you say hs is super painful the one I have does not hurt at all it is just annoying because I can see and feel that it is an open sore. The doctor said use the cream and antibiotics and if it doesn't heal come back and see the dermatologist.

Thank you! I hope it does too! I brought in a print out of why I thought my sore was hs and my family doctor said I was being silly and she has had a few people with it and she said what I have it not that.

Oh....OK, that's great news for you. It will heal, I have HS and then had a really bad cyst on my butt...I used Silvadene cream on it and it heal completely in two months. Just make sure you have a good doctor and you stay on top of it.
