High blood pressure at pre-op assessment before THR next month

Posted , 8 users are following.

Hello all,

I am due to have a THR on 13 November. During my pre-op assessment my blood pressure was high, 160/100. Nurse has suggested taking readings at home which I am doing and the readings are a little lower. 141/87 but readings vary. Has anyone had their THR cancelled due to high blood pressure, will be having a spinal block and sedation. Doesn't help the blood pressure worrying about it, but just interested if anyone had experience of this.

Thanks,

Sarah

At my pre-op my blood pressure was found to be high. I then just took my own blood pressure at home for a week and gave the surgery my results. The hospital then seemed happy. I had a spinal but I decided not to have sedation as I wanted to know what was going on.

Yes, my bp was high but surgery was not cancelled. I was told to drink plenty fluids especially water. I do not have extremely high bp since my surgeries as I was told sometimes pain will accelerate blood pressures. I wish you well.

My diastolic pressure was 90 which they did not like. What was yours? I normally have low blood pressure, so it may have been the stress of the preop. They would not have operated until I had my local surgery OK it.

Thanks all for the replies. I guess I need to wait until they see my readings for the week. The diastolic pressure is around 90 and slightly below. Its a bit of a vicious circle as I am still worried even taking it at home. Oh well even if my THR is delayed I am sure it will be for the best reason. I will let you all know how I get on.

    Hi Sarah,

I had been on medication for high blood pressure for a few years before my op in July.. I had a spinal block and sedation and after my op my blood pressure was low (I think the spinal block can cause this) anyhow, the docs took me off my medication and I have been off it since. I am due to have my other hip done next month again via spinal block, so I am hoping that my normal reading remains, a bonus for me, in addition to my now pain free hip.

    hi there!

i too am on medication for hypertension and was worried about this prior to my hip op in AUGUST.

I bought a blood pressure monitor and although it wasn't exceptionally high my doc still felt it was worth upping my medication until I got the op incase the surgeon refused to go ahead with it. All went ok, I also had a spinal block and sedation - the anaethsetist brought my pressure down for the op (apparently they do this anyway!) and it was a bit too low after the op so was my Hb level (7) when it should be around 12.

Had iron tablets to take for about 2 months after and all was well.

My op up to now has been a success, O am still on hypertension medication and will probably be forever!!

good luck with your op! I'm sure all will be well!

Are you on an ACE Inhibitor for your blood pressure? It was just that there was an article of warning in the Telegraph and the BMJ this week.
