Help, I'm getting nervous now.  I'm scheduled for a long waited hip replacement & I have high blood pressure. I'm concerned that my surgery may not go ahead.  I'm currently on medication for this but it won't go down.  The surgery is scheduled for 6 days time. Help????

I was told during my pre-op assessment yesterday.  I'm already on Ramipril & my GP doubled the dosage immediately after my assessment.

Hi so do you know how high it was, it is bound to increase as you are going to have pre surgery anxiety, did they say they would carry it out

I too have high blood pressure and high cholesterol but they're under control with medication and weight control.  If your doctor says ok, I would not hesitate getting the hip surgery.  It's my opinion as a recipient of hip replacement surgery that it's much better than not being able to walk around because of arthritis.  The adverse side effects of hip surgery are minor compared to an arthritic hip and side effects are only for a minority of patients.  Not being able to walk and exercise will exacerbate your high blood pressure no good will from from that.  I think exercise is very important, more important than any of your blood pressure medication.

I've never been so scared before mine in August.   I wouldn't chose to have another one but wouldn't be so worried at all. Maybe not the cause but regular dep breaking plus taking Kalms helped take the edge off my palpitations

Helen, as a fellow hip replacement grad (May 2016), I too had high blood pressure , and took meds for many years prior to surgery. Little did I realize that a primary cause for the high BP was the pain from the aching hip. Post surgery and PT, I noticed my blood pressure was low compared to pre-surgery days. As a result of pain free living, I was able to eliminate the BP meds and my BP has been normal for over a year. Best wishes on your upcoming surgery and decision to live pain and eventually BP meds free. Regards, RJ.

I have high BP too. I used lavender inhalers to calm myself. They are like Vick's inhalers and are usually available at drugstores and Whole Foods. Keep breathing and try not to stress!

Call your physician.  HBP can complicate life in general.

Hi Helen. I have suffered long term high blood pressure which seemed uncontrolled. Then I was put onto Spironolactone. ....they worked instantly and BP has been fine ever since.....ask your GP to try them for you. Good luck x

Hi Helen, I also had high blood pressure but and the anticipation of the surgery didn’t help but it will be ok as long as you tell the Dr.

I have high bp and am on 4 meds. Since my hip replacement my bp has gone down and meds have been adjusted.

I won't make any assumptions about your situation but the two things that kept my BP up regardless of medication was salt and self-medicating the pain with alcohol. I solved the salt habit with Himalayan Pink Salt, it's a mineral that is not sodium based but gives more of a salt taste than salt. I buy from the bulk bin or it's very pricey. The alcohol thing was solved after the surgery when the pain went away.

I also have pain induced high BP from hip pain and all the pain pills I was taking. The worse the pain the higher the BP. I had one hip replaced, Dec. 2017, and waiting on the other to be replaced very soon. I try to function without so much pain meds since my pain has been cut in half. I monitor my BP daily and it has decreased and stabilized since my surgery. My Dr will be adjusting my BP meds after my next THR surgery. Also the anxiety of having surgery is not helping your BP either. They will give you something before surgery to calm you down or they did me. I was ready to stroke out from nerves right before my surgery. Good luck.
