high bp

Hi,

I thought this would be a good idea for me to get my woes off my chest. I was diagnosed with HBP over a week ago and prescribed 2mg Rampril daily. I am a worrier and suffer with severe anxiety. So it is no surprise really my bp is through the roof. finished my history degree last week and I am now waiting for grades to see if I have passed!. Anyway being diagnosed with HBP has scared the living day lights out of me. The doctor called the hospital to speak to a consultant whilst I was in surgery for advice. I have had bloads done, and I am due to have a ECG done next week.

I am overweight, fortunately I stopped smoking a month ago as I didn't feel well, I had been suffering with vertigo for a couple of monthsmall which I thought was down to an ear infection! Although the vertigo had subsided a little I am still experiencing blurred vision. I have been taking readings at home and they are coming inbetween 129/79-150/111.

This is basically scaring me and I am trying so hard not to worry. I am also due to fly out on holiday on the 10th June and now I am worried I won't be able to go if my bp dosent go down. Please can anyway advise or just give some words of comfort...please.

Shaz, have you tried taking readings at home 2-3 times a day? Just for the short term - no need to keep it up indefinitely or let it become an obsession. It's just that there seems to be an unusually big difference between your highest and lowest readings, which suggest to me that it may be anxiety-related. Most people recommend taking three consecutive readings each time, with 4-5 minutes between them, and then taking an average of the three to give the correct reading. Maybe you could do this a couple of times a day for the next few weeks and chart the average reading each time, to get a better overview of what your BP is really doing.

It sounds as if your anxiety is getting the better of you and pumping up your blood pressure. Even if your BP was at 150/110 all the time, it's unlikely it would cause your vertigo and related symptoms. Maybe you had an inner ear infection as a result of the virus that was circulating this winter. There have been a lot of reports of people getting viral vestibular neuritis even without having had cold symptoms. This could account for why your symptoms are now subsiding without treatment. Dizziness can also be a symptom of anxiety.

Your BP is nowhere near the danger level, even if it needs attention, so I can see no reason at all why you shouldn't go on holiday.

You really need to calm down. You're not in any danger. It may even be that if you can deal with your anxiety your BP will drop back to normal levels (and 129/79 is normal in any case).

Thanks for your reply lily 65, I have been taking rea dig 3 x times daily, and example of yesterday is as follows. 138/90 8:30 am

      142/07 14:4pm

      141/101 23:45pm

I have woken some mornings and it has been 128/81 but that has been rare. When I visited docs last week it was 185/111 so docs upped rampril. Bit I agree lily I do think it is anxiety without a doubt. My head is paining, again anxiety.

I have taken up exercise etc. So I guess if Lwill take take time to get back to normal. I am just worrying about it. I really appreciate your feedback.

Sounds like your anxiety is pushing up your BP as the day goes on. Try doing three readings one after another in one sitting, especially at the evening reading. BP often falls during the course of three consecutive readings, and the average is considered to be the correct reading.
