High Cholesterol.

I have had high cholesterol most of my life. The Statins I am taking are Pitavastatina 4mg. My cholesterol is still too high on theses Statins, am I wasting my time taking these?. Is there any other treatment I can take. I also have a rash all over my body and a liver problem. My Dr. does not seem to have an answer, he keeps telling to keep taking the tablets and try drinking Pomegranite juice.

I was put on 80 mg of simvastatin back when it was still allowed in the US, and it ruined my life for several years. It made my carpal tunnel symptoms a lot worse, caused memory problems, and played a role in the depression that developed. It took me a while to realize that these problems (and others) were due to the simvastin because I was given a very incomplete list of the possible side effects that did not mention anything except for muscle problems and liver damage. I now avoid statins like the plague. I'd rather have a functioning brain than MAYBE increase my risk of heart disease. Please know that statins can increase your risk of developing congestive heart disease, as researched by Dr. Peter Langsjoen, a cardiology specialist in Texas.

Cholesterol plays many important roles in your body.

    •cell membranes

    •steroid hormones

    •nerve synapses

    •myelin sheaths in nervous system

    •Vitamin D

    •others

There is a rather scholarly article at https://www.hindawi.com/journals/cholesterol/2012/292598/ that goes into more detail about the roles and regulation of cholesterol in your body, though it can be a little tedious to read.

Basically, pay attention to your body. The rash and the liver problem are telling you something.

It seems like a reasonable level. So don't worry. I recently got off statins as I read a lot of bad news on them, and instead I'm trying to opt for a more natural alternative. After 5 weeks of trying Reishi and Shiitake Mushrooms in conjunction with a lower dose of statins, I can confirm at my last visit with the doctor my levels are lower than average. You should try and take a natural approach. Less drugs is best I feel.

I avoid statins at all costs - they do nothing to alleviate plaque build up (which is the main cause of blocked arteries - and not cholesterol) but they do reduce HDL along with LDL, which is not good news. As you have discovered they also cause liver enzyme issues - again bad news. Try any/all of the following:

plant stanols, beetroot (in any form but preferably not cooked), garlic, niacin (also good for reducing blood pressure), phytosterols, flax seed, soy. None of the above are harmful and all of them have additional benefits, ie reducing triglycerides which is more important than just cholesterol levels. However, it's best to take niacin under consultation with your healthcare provider, as dosage levels are a critical issue and they can advise on any contra indications with other medications you may be taking.

I have personally tried this and I know it helps 100%

1-Oatmeal half a cup before lunch and I put one tablespoon of maple syrup to make it tastier (you can eat carbs and sugar)

2-I stopped eating carbs and sugar. That's another way.
