High heels/ weak thigh muscles

Hi everyone i hope that everyone is recovering well.

I'm currently 15weeks post op from total hip replacement and was wondering when i can start to wear shoes with heels?

I'm also having problems with my muscles in the thigh that was operated on I saw the Physio this week to be told it's still very weak. Doing my exercises plus riding static bike lots of walking. What else can i do to help this? Next week starting hydrotherapy to see if this helps. Any suggestions would be wonderful. Thanks.

    Hi Sarah,

    I was back in 2 1/2 - 3 inch heels by 12 weeks.  Practice walking in them at home for short periods of time.  As long as you are feel stable, there really isn't too much of a difference. At least I didn't think so.

      Hi Hope,

      Yes, they are my rescued babies.  Got them both from the ASPCA a few years back.  My husband took that picture for me.  He gets home before me most of the time.  He'd tell me that the dogs sit on the sofa staring at the door waiting for me to come home.  I thought he was joking until he took this picture.  They are the best!!

    Hello Sarah,

     Wearing hi heels? YIKES , I would wait till you have had more time to get back strength and muscle in the op leg and ankle. 

    You are doing all the right exercises to gain back strength and muscle. Take it slow . Falling or tripping is not a option. Start out will low platforms then mabe work your way up. I was given the OK by my surgeon to ride my horse after 6 months. In my 40's at the time after first THR. . 

    Give it time for the implant to heal 6-8 months for the bone to grow on the implant to secure it in place. Take is slow and build up time in shoes daily. Also best to check with your surgeon, they know your history and from xray can evaluate your stage of healing.

    Soon you will be puttin on your shoes👠👠!

    Did yr physio not give you some more exercises? I went to physio monthly till 20 weeks. Worked hard. Also I've realised you have to keep at it or you lose muscle tone. I'm 10 months now. Still keep it up. Do my exercises and walk. Failing that, get on the bike.

    As for heels 👠, I haven't worn those for years. That's a whole different ball game which I gave up on.

    good responses and advice - 

    as long as you are not able to stay balanced, it might be wiser to not wear high heels  yet - You mention that your thigh muscles are still weak ... 

    Are you still using a walking aid?  are you sometimes limping ?

    15 weeks is not that long after such a major surgery - 

    Discuss with your PT when they feel that you are strong enough to walk in high heels ...

    At two weeks post RTHR the thought of wearing heels makes me feel slightly sick!! I haven't been able to wear heels comfortably for years anyway, partly feet partly early signs of the hip prob, and finally lowered my sights to pretty flat shoes/boots.  I still have friends who teeter around in gorgeous shoes and somehow or other they hack being seen around with me!

    i agree with everyone else: even if you love your heels, give the hip and femur plenty of time (months) to get strong before you even think of them. The weak thigh muscles need to be built up first.  How about a combo of your physio and clinical massage? There is nothing like specific massage for bringing tired or lazy muscles back to life.
