Hip and knee problems doctors taking time to help.

Hi all, sorry if this is a common problem.

but ever since i was walking i always walked a bit strange, not glaringly obvious, bit of a limp, and when younger on my tip toes until i forced myself to walk heal to floor first so its natural now. my mum took me to doctors as a child, which apparently was told i would grow out of it im now 24. apparently i was hip checked a couple of times as a mandatory check whilst under 6 months old, i found the records. all fine.

anyway the last 2-3 years ive been in considerable pain with my R knee. it first started off as a slight grinding sound, now its ridiculously loud and crunching, popping etc. went see a GP over uncomfortable feelings in knee, and the crunching. my GP whipped off his shoe and swiveled his ankle round and said, "we all click in joints nothing wrong with you" he didnt even get me to make them crunch, or even look at my legs.

i explained the feelings i have and he said "if youre that concerned go refer yourself to physiotherapy" which i did.

12 weeks later i see a physiotherapist and basically instantly get signed off as even though im in pain, ive still got good mobility..

along with that ive had my hip clicking all my life both sides

, just when i walk, ive never really paid much attention to this, as ive never known my life without it, but now its very painful on days especially if i walk a distance or go up the stairs, right deep within the groin.

Ive genuinely gone to GP around 18 times for this issue, and then they started fobbing me off as anxiety. which by this point i am probably getting apprehensive that im conscious that my joints are being ground to a pulp.

its clear ive got knock knees always have. you dont need to be a scientist to work that out. but GPs wont even look.

anyway. now ive seen another GP at same practice. 5 months ago.after complaining numrous times.

he took one look at my legs and said 'do you know you have knock knees'

he also did some mobility flexes to me, and said 'thats not right, im sending you for xray'

well now other knee is doing exactly the same (starting to)

xray has come back, my ball (fits into socket) is smooth and fine on knee, its satisfactory.. which obviously was a shock because im in agony in bed, cant do much exercise or walking, without pain flaring up. walking round shops is embarrassing as you can literally hear grinding with every step if your in a 10ft vicinity of me, some days are better than others. he said he wants to focus on knee first then hip. why cant they just diagnose both, then work out a care plan on one at a time once i know.

i just dont know where else to turn. anyway this one GP is nice. and he has referred me to a MSK clinic he said they are GPs with more power.?? why cant he just refer me to joint specialist ? anyway my appointment is in September, that will be 4 years since initial appointment.. i literally cannot wait any longer. i just genuinely cannot cope no more. 24 with mobility issues?? then when i go to MSK clinic, im worried they will discharge me instantly. like physiotherapy and i have to start again, or ill have to wait till december (NHS waiting times) for more scans e.g MRI i really cannot wait that long. hard because people who dont really see my often cant see how much its effecting me, because to them nothing is wrong, nothing has changed. a regular member of public wouldnt instantly know im struggling to walk. like i cant even stand still for long periods, its like a dire need to sit. i am 5ft 7 9st 10lbs so not over weight either.

sorry for long post. any ideas would be great of what it could be, or just general help. sorry again .

Hi Jason, I am not a doctor, but from what you write, you need help. Have you googled MSK Clinic - there is lots of info there and I am not sure if any, or all of it, would apply to you. Check it out, if you haven't already, and be persistent in seeking help as fast as you can. I am 40 years or so older than you and if it was me, at my age, I would make myself a nuisance until I got the help I needed, so you definitely should do too. I wish you all the best and hope you are treated asap.

thank you for your reply, well im really starting to feel a nuisance. some days i am fine (as in, a lot less pain but still achey in effected areas) but i feel doctors make it out i over dramatise which is what i dont want to do, but i am genuinely in pain.

yes ive had a look into msk clinic, and to me they a seem to be glorified physiotherapists with more knowledge than the typical physiotherapist. hence why im so apprehensive about going, because of past experiences. i genuinely miss the way i was and i am worries about what the future may hold for my joints, say when im 50, i really appreciate your words of wisdom. and i will fight my case as much as i can.

also im concerned they find out what it is, and wont actually sort the issue, i really dont want to be on pain meds for most my life. which i feel is masking a problem.

Don't give up. Do be afraid to be a pain in their arse. As I said I am no doctor, maybe you will need an operation, but that would be better than a lifetime on drugs that only (maybe) mask the problem. Ask to be referred to a doctor that specialises in joint problems (I don't know what the professional word is) and not just a physiotherapist.

Become like the cranky, moany old woman I am (without the sex change). Good luck.

i am really sorry to hear about all your joint problems, unfortunently an X RAY can not always see the true damage in your joints , if i were you i would try and get the doctor to agree to let you have MRI SCAN on your hips both and your knees both.

because an MRI SCAN can pick up exatley what is going wrong with your hips and knees.

it was not till i had my mri scan that they found i needed new hips and new knees. and if you are in that much pain then i would insist on having MRI SCANS.

    kind regards

      hello,

so sorry for extremely late reply! only just seen this.

thank you for your comment. im constantly aching but some days are a lot better than others,

yesterday afternoon i fell asleep on the sofa for 20 mins my left hip was agonising when i woke up, and this is the hip with the less general pain, but more grinding sounds, hmm.

i have an appointment on 24th September (waited 3 months) to see a MSK specialist for knees only. which annoyed me because i asked for hips too, im hoping they can do both. but then this is only a consultation. who knows how long after that till i can get a MRI!

must admit im getting sick of the NHS. They do a wonderful job, once they get a diagnosis but ive lost all faith and motivation to do anything now. for 2 years ive been batted off saying basically nothing wrong, im too young etc. finally one doctor finally looked at legs (others wouldnt even do that) then referred me instantly. I just know that consultation will come, and they will let me down again.

i know i shouldnt but ive considered A&E on particularly bad days. and considered going private. but then you need a doctors refferal to a private MRI! which the GP is the problem. unless i see a private doctor who will refer me . then i can present the findings to my own GP who will probably still have to do their own testing. just sick of it all now.

at moment i can 'cope' but what happens when i get to my 30s / 40s etc thats what scares me. hmm

anyway sorry for long reply. and thanks again .
