Hip Arthrogram

Posted , 7 users are following.

Hi, Went to the Dr. for groin pain in my right hip he suggested having a Hip Arthrogram Injection. On a scale of 1-10 my right hip is a 4 not ready for a hip replacement yet, just had my left one replaced in May 2015.

Has anyone had this procedure and what really is involved?  What does it cost? How long does the shot last?

Thanks.

My first shot lasted a month. My second and last shot lasted 3 days. Procedure takes about 30 minutes. Slight pain. It either works or does not. Best of luck

So this is similar to the series of 3 spine injections...those didn't really work for me...Probably not worth the cost if I have to have a monthly shot..I guess I'll stick to Tramadol and Ibuprofen...Thanks

Is this the same as a cortisone shot?  If so, mine lasted about a month, though I was still getting some of the "pinching" in the groin.  Surgeon said I could get 3-4 months, 2-3 months or it wouldn't work at all!  i was happy to get the month.  Had TRHR on May 15th.  Good Luck!  I can't imagine going through this twice!

I'm going to put it off for a couple years I hope...I have groin pain when walking, and my leg gives out at times. I waited till I almost couldn't walk before my first replacement, not going to wait that long this time..I probably won't have the shot, sounds like it doesn't last very long.😕Thanks

Loral, I had the injection (insurance covered the cost) and it is just a simple injection that is relatively painful for a few seconds - although my knee injection hurt more than the hip injection.  But neither one worked for me.   Have had them many years ago and they worked great but not this time.  :-(

Linda Thanks...I'm just wondering if I should bother since it is so short termed and would be needed again and again..I want to put off the hip replacement for as long as a can, and should probably just take pain meds.....neutral

I can't give you the price as I am Medicare and Tricare and it covers it completely. I got the shots in my left hip for about 6 years before finally getting hip replacement in May. The shots are not bad, they gave me no aneasthetic, although some might but I like to drive myself home. There is numbing agent in the shot so that helps. You lay on an x-ray table, they use flourescope to get the exact spot. That means a tiny shot of dye, I never even feel that. Once they know they have the spot, they inject the steroid with numbing agent. The shot does not hurt but as it gets towards the end the pressure of the last bit fitting in the area does for a second, but then it's over! Don't jump off the table as the side injected will feel numb for about 15 minutes. They will help you down. By the time I get out of the gown and dressed and to the parking lot, numbness I gone and I can drive. Ultimately the skill of the doctor is what makes it easy or hard. Most doctors do it in about 5 minutes, almost no discomfort and the relief afterwards is so worth it. I have had a doctor that could not easily find the right spot and that was more uncomfortable and took longer but still not unbearable. Some places will do an aneasthetic but that is such a bigger ordeal for a 5 minute procedure. It's honestly not that uncomfortable and it's not for long anyway. I drove myself there and back because all I got was the numbing agent mixed with the steroid.

    dear loral,

so sorry to hear this, darling -

I am afraid that the pain in right hip will not go away and might even get worse -

That was my experience and can happen within months -

I also was offered the cortisone shot but had a bad experience with one in elbow (tendonitis) -

Arthrogram sounds more like what Peggy had , shot with dye ..

How are you getting on otherwise ?

    big warm hug

Thanks Renee,  I'm doing good, I wish this wasn't going on. I only have slight groin pain and my leg gives out sometimes, pain is not unbearable....and I do hope it takes it's time, like years!!! neutral

I still have bursitis flare ups on the left hip when I do too much but a heating pad helps. Same Dr. offered me a shot for the Left Hip, never got it, I think I'll hold off until pain is real bad.

I guess ibuprophen could help, I really thought I was done with all this...Take Care, Loral

    Hi Loral,

I went to a pain specialist prior to having a FHR.  He specializes in these types of injections.  He advised me that in his years of experience, this type of procedure works quite well on the spine for sciatic nerve pain, but not so much on the hips due to joint deterioration.  He was willing to give it a try if I wanted to, but he wanted to let me know that the success rate isn't very good.

Hi, Thanks...I had those shots for my back they really didn't help me. I cancelled my appointment and maybe if the pain becomes unbearable I may give them a try.....

      Dear Loral,

Don't wait until pain becomes unbearable .. and the success rate of these shots are short lived -

I know you want to wait a couple of years before you get your other hip done, however, you might do more damage to your new hip - when you are in pain and wobbling around your new hip will help you but it is not your natural hip ... so a lot of pressure and strain and weird postures is put on this, perhaps still healing hip -

I had my 2nd surgery  months after 1st one - even in that short time san I feel that my new hip had taken a beating - had trochanteric bursitis diagnosed - my recovery really started when I 2 new hips !!

well, this is my personal experience, of course  ...

      keep in touch, sweetheart

      angel blessings

If you are hurting don't put it off too long. Just give yourself 8 weeks to take it easy afterwards. I put it off way too long and now only 3 weeks post op, I am wondering why? My pain is SO much less now. Just waiting on the restrictions to end and to get my energy back after a major surgery, but hip is doing great! I am sorry I put up with it so long before getting it done.
