Hip clunk 7 weeks post op

Posted , 7 users are following.

Typical 7 weeks post hip op ,had a good day managed to do a few more than usual chores in the house and was feeling pleased with myself. Just got up to walk out to the kitchen and that right hip did a really strange double clunk like movement.

Froze instantly for 1 minute ,then soooooo slowly tiny steps back to my chair.

Was planning on doing my exercises then go out for a walk . Now feel worried so going to just sit in my chair ,scared to move.

Hadnt experienced that before , anyone else experienced this. ???

So worried it will dislocate . 😩

Suppose question is did it hurt, does your leg look normal in direction and feet, does it hurt when you go to stand up again,

No pain ,leg and feet in the right direction. Just aware that side feels a bit stiffer maybe than earlier today. Definately didn't dislocate ,the only way I can discribe it is

you know that clunk click feeling you sometimes get in your shoulder joint or knee joint if you move suddenly, but a bit of a sway to it. !!!!

Definately not felt that in my hip before.

Hi Suziemo great your feeling better. Your new hip will feel a little clunky sometimes I am 5 months post op and every now and then a little clunk...no pain ...think it's just your body saying I am new take it steadier or have a rest!!

If your worried you can always ring your GP. I

Strange feeling but normal ....I think.

Yes seems to be ok now , think it's just the healing process. But constantly feel stressed about it. Don't think I will ever relax and think it's ok ,so anxious all the time now 😔

      Hooe yours is ok now

      with best wishes suzie

I believe the tendons ping and boing against each other and make quite a loud sound . Dislocation would be agony .. Probably some tendons jostling for position back !

      Hi Hazel

yes could be just the tendons as its ok now . They just don't tell you what to expect at the hospital .

    Hi Susie.

Know the clunk well. I found it could be painful for a few seconds until I moved to a different position. My PT said it's just the prosthesis settling down.

I was really worried when it happened to me and it was fairly frequently now it's much less.

A real roller coaster this recovery journey. Take care. Take it easy and keep coming back. X

      Hi Sandra

Know what you mean about a roller coaster . I have a few days where I feel more comfortable and begin to get a bit more confident ,then a few nasty pains and noises and get scared again.

Constantly thinking about my hip , will I ever forget about it !

      Hope your ok

    Suziemo:

I am less than 4 weeks post op and have experienced the "hip clunking" you have experienced. It's a deep "clunk" ,felt but not heard, in the joints that is healing. I notice more when I am walking. My doctor told me this is common and part of the healing process. The joint / prosthesis is settling into place based on your body's movements.

My doctor told me if you doslocated your help you would know it! You wouldn't be able to move your leg at all and wouldn't be able to stand up wo an aid.

The best thing to do is call and consult with your doctor as soon as you can to gain a peace of mind.

I am walking wo an aid and also doing light chores around the house. Walking the dog but am starting to get cabin fever)cheesygrin. Am feeling pretty good, BUT, must temper myself as this is a time depended healing process that you can't make go faster. My doctor has told me repeatedly, "dave, less is more"  for the first 6 weeks.

    Take care,

      Hi

yes definately feel much better at weekends when my husband is around and I do less, so think it could be I over do things in the week.

Feel safer with him around too, should anything happen he is here. In the week days are long and I feel anxious on my own should something happen

Hope all is ok with you .

    hi suzie,

love the way you describe : froze instantly for a minute ..

Scary moment for sure ... I had similar experience around 12 weeks post-op -

apparently this can happen from a tendon, called the psoas tendon, rubbing against the new hip.so it is all part of the healing process -

it did  not hurt though and has maybe happened another 2 -3 times ...

    big warm hug

    Hi Suziemo

Hope your hip is now ok.  Am about to have op on Monday.  So many things to learn about.  Really nervous about the whole thing.  Not really in that much pain but know hip really arthritic and frightened joint will olapse and that would be major work!

What type of replacement did you have?

Good luck with your appointment tomorrow. Hopefully the suergeon will be very helpful and give good advice.

Am sorting hospital bag right now.  Having it done in London Clinic.  Just told to bring toiletries, nighware etc.  Was going to have it done at another nearby hospital but had to changed.  There they asked for a raised loo seat to be brought in.  However not sure if will need that as so short.  At pre assessment they said legs must be 90 degrees but would have to cut down furniture for that to happen and not going down that route hopefully!  This rule is not for ever is it?  Am having a posterior op.  Maybe should have looked at anterior?  Just hope will be in right position as that important for wear. Don't think incision is that big - well hope not!

Now panicing about amount of pain will be in.  Is it really horrendous?  How long does it last for ?  As my pelvis has twisted to compensate any problems have been more in the back and whole hip but not so much in the leg  However can sometimes get a sharp piercing pain in leg.

Are you pain free now?  Where was your incision Suzie?

      Hi Pixie

i had a lateral approach apparently ,it's down the outside of my right leg ,non cemented with looks like 3 screws  at the top ( pins) my incision is quite long about -10 inches but surprising how quickly it has faded already .

Obviously it's a bit painful for a while but a different pain than arthritus ,just a healing pain.

still have odd pains on and off ,but just sounds like it's my nerves firing back up inside and my muscles etc if I over do it.

Been out walking quite a bit the last few days so think I have over done it again. Going to have a few quiet days now.

Look forward to hear how your doing.

      With best wishes

      suzie X
