Hip dislocation after total hip replacement

Hi all,

I'm 20 years old and had my first total hip replacement in December 2012 after having problems with my left hip, since birth.

I had a great 5 months with my new ceramic hip and was able to do so much more than I was ever able to pre-op.

However, on May 2 2013, my replacement hip dislocated - while I was with my physiotherapist. I was taken to hospital where my hip was manipulated into place under a general anesthetic. The surgeon there told me that my hip was a little unstable in one position but to go about my day-to-day business as normal and have a follow up appointment with my own consultant who carried out the procedure. Just shy of a fortnight later, I was due to see my consultant at his clinic, as I was putting on my shoes, my replacement hip dislocated again. Again, I was rushed to hospital where my hip was manipulated back into place under a general anesthetic, this time by my own consultant. Since then, it has been decided I require further surgery, which I will undergo next week. Not me, nor my surgeon knows what the procedure will entail as my x-rays look fine but my hip feels unstable.

I am absolutely devastated and wondered if there is anyone out there who has gone through the same thing or can give me an indication into what may be done and recovery times?

Thanks

Emma

Going in frontal may not be right for one person and good for another

Also the risk of etopic bibe formation should be evaluated

A dose of radiation was used at one time to help prevent that

    Im not sure now

    Good fortune and health

Hello Emma - I have no idea if you will get this but your story sounds just like mine! I am 38, have developmental hip dysplasia, had a THR on my left hip in December 2017, had dislocation #1 on 12/28 and dislocation #2 on 2/1. My surgeon is discussing a revision to change out the femoral head. If you get this can you please contact me! Or if anyone who has advice on hip dysplasia/THR/dislocations feel free to post too! THANKS!

Oh my you poor baby......  I had a total right hip replacement in 1986 when I was 28 years old..... 2 years later I slipped on ice.....went to get checked......told I was okay..... one week later in the car I turned to answer my daughter's question and the hip came out of the socket...... OMG.... the pain took my breath away as it was up my butt moving up my back!!!  fire department came....ambulance.... it was awful...... the smarts surgeon that put it back in place under general told me I would have to be very careful doing things like tying my shoes , turning to the left while sitting straight ahead and that he had dislocated my hip 5 times during surgery to see what motions made it pop out..... I could have killed him for the muscle damage he caused......  I have been very careful and luckily with swimming was able to keep the leg in the socket.... now I am sixty and the replacement is broken and worn out and I have to live with it due to other problems..... so if they are redoing your surgery make sure you have a hip that lasts 30 years as others only last for 10 years and you are too young to have replacements all the time......

Praying for you!  Keep us posted on your progress..... IM me if you want to vent or chat....Erela

Hi, I had both my hips replaced in 2017. The first one was in January and now if I lean on it for a bit it feels like it pops out of place but if i catch myself it seems like it goes back into place. Im 48 yrs old ( I dont know if that matters) but I was wondering if anyone else experienced this? And if so what should I do next? Thanks for any replies.

Hi, the same exact thing happened to me in 2013. I was putting my sock on and my left hip dislocated. Same as you taken to ER put back in under anesthesia and put in that horrible Abduction brace for months and months!!! I already had my right hip done years before and I have never had 1 bit of trouble. So I had a revision Jan 2014 to my left hip because after the dislocation and brace my hip never felt stable!!! And as we all know nobody wants to experience another dislocation.

After the revision the surgeon replaced the ball and the plastic liner but left the original stem in. My hip has never been the same!!! This is a nightmare and pain is never-ending. I'm going to see a hip expert next week to see why I am having so much problems.

The surgeon who did the revision is supposed to be the best but I don't recommend Dr. Raymond Kim to anybody!!! I believe his office is strictly all about the money. This has really screwed up my life. In 2013 I had just went back to work full time. They disabled me in 2005

But I wanted to go back to work so in April 2013 I went back to work full time and in October 2013 I had to have the THR and 3 weeks later I dislocated and then had the revision and I have not been able to go back to work since then. And now I'm in horrible shape. I hope the next doctor can help me.

hello I am new to this group. I had my first surgery on my left hip last year. I had terrible bursitis and pain. AT my yearly check up the doctor found the artificial hip was lose and needed to be replaced. During my recovery I had a my hip dislocate. It was the worst pain I have ever felt. The entire process was extremely stressful , some friends from the fire company came and some how got me in a chair and into my car. My hospital is one hour away. My doctor sedated me and manually placed it back in. Today I felt it start to dislocate I was able to get it back in. I called my doctor and am going to see him this week. I have never heard of wearing a brace!

I'm so grateful that I found this group. I don't know where everyone is from, I'm from New Jersey.
