Hip distended - anterior approach

Posted , 5 users are following.

Hello all. I am 7 weeks post op now and my surgeon was puzzled by my pain and swelling in the side of my leg (by the hip) and said it looked distended. My osteopath confirmed that it was distended. My osteopath recommended I get an aqua jogger and practice "running" in the deep end of a pool, to activate the front muscles to try to pull it in again.

Has anyone else suffered a distended hip post surgery? It would be so good to hear. Mine's only an inch or so, perhaps a bit less, but it means I can't wear jeans or anything! (Jeans were my staple clothing, I'm a mum with little children!!)

Thank you all.

    Hi Lucinda

Your hip is actually in the groin (ball and socket), and the swelling on the outside of the body suggests you have inflamed soft tissue away from the operation site. I don't know much about the anterior approach - how it's done and how much soft tissue is involved. I guess your surgeon might have been expected to know.  Other people on the forum have had varied experiences of anterior approach surgery and will tell you what they think.... Could it be where the shaft enters your thigh? It's a major op and you might just need more time to repair.

I am at six weeks post-op (posterior approach) and went to see a myofascial massage specialist yesterday who trained at the Jing school in Brighton (where are you in the world?) and because it has healed perfectly she worked directly and very gently on the scar area through light clothing.  The area feels different today, not so "stuck" on the side of my body, but I will give it a couple of days before I report generally on the appointment and its effectiveness.

I do know you'll need to be very careful about lifting your kids! I was lifting grandchildren during the last 5 years and any pressure went straight down into my hip.  I hope you've got some help?

The very best of everything to you - hope you get some help from other people..

Sorry to hear you are having problems. I suggest that you go to a good chiropractor not an osteopath.

    Good luck

    hi lucindagl,

Not sure what to tell you here since I am not a medical person -- however .... could it be trochanteric bursitis ?   I was diagnosed with TB when I went for follow up visit post-op 2nd THR ... My surgeon wanted me to rest more, cut back on exercises and if needed, take pain medication ... If not gone by 6  weeks he would consider a steriod shot --- it got better and since I am petrified of those shots (had bad experience with one for tennis elbow!) did not get the shot ..

it is all still so tender and fragile darling --- even if there are no ,muscles or tendons cut ...

take care and let us know how you are getting on ..

    big warm hug

    renee
