Hip fracture described by the word "chronic"

My mother is in hospital. I get inconsistent information from the medics. It has been suggested that my mother, age 95, may have had a hip fracture for some time hence the use of the word "chronic". She is receiving pain management. She can walk with a frame. The fracture does not seem to be a clear-cut break that can be seen on an x-ray. Has anyone come across a "chronic hip fracture"?
