    hi ann,

warm welcome to the hippies forum where we share our personal stories and experiences related to total hip replacement surgery - members are in all stages of this procedure, including still on the fence, pre-op - , post-op - the whole enchilada -

So sorry to hear that you are in so much pain that you needed a cortisone inection - I am assuming that you have pain in your hip ...

What diagnosis were you given - was an x-ray taken?

Mine was  affected by severe osteo-arthiritis , bone-on-bone grinding pain - I was told by GP that cortisone injection might help for a very short time (it was too advanced) - so I didn't get one ...

a lot of people benefit and have relief but in between time will get shorter -

    was this your first shot?

I apologize for asking all these questions ...

of course, when you have developed a fever or swelling , contact your doctor immediately -

and come back here with any questions or concerns ---

    you are not alone

    big warm hug

Hi thanks for reply, have had an x-ray and was told moderate arthritus in the hip not enough for operation, the guy who did the ultra scan would not say if it was a bursa, but I was hoping for a faster relief from the injection, just wondered if anyone had had it and could tell me how long before I feel any signs of less pain.

I hope other members will respond to your question -

the only experience I have is a injection in elbow (tendonitis) which was very painful afterwards - Orthopedic accidently injected in bone -

How are you doing right now?

I hope it works for you and wish you months of being pain free-

Following my THR on June 17, I was given a prescription for Percocet, which I was taking at to prescribed times. For the past week, I've only been taking it at bedtime, using Tylenol 1 during the day.

While Percocet helps to reduce the pain, it leaves me feeling like a zombie the next day.

Last night, I didn't take Percocet; instead took two Tylenol 1s. Didn't sleep at all due to the pain.

Does anyone know of a painkiller that will help me get through the night, but without the negative side-effect?

    Hi Ann,

I had a cortisone shot although my OA was considered advanced. My surgeon wanted to know what symptoms would be relieved as some weren't a-typical. I had it first thing in the morning and was fairly uncomfortable most of the day but the next morning it felt like a miracle! No pain at all on that side. It only lasted full force for about 2 weeks because I was advanced but yours doesn't sound right to me. I'd be heading back to the Dr if it doesn't change quickly. Good luck!

Thanks, well it is getting on for 24 hours now, and to be honest it feels the same as before the injection, but perhaps a bit worse as I have had no painkillers today, Will wait the 24 hours and see then,

Before I had my hip replacement, I would get cortizone injections under fluoroscopy and I took data to measure the effectiveness.  I would be sore from the injection for a few hours but later that same day, I would be in significantly less pain than before the injection.  Unfortunately, the pain relief would only last for a couple of weeks so it was not a viable long term solution since they would only do the injection every 3 or 4 months.
