It very important to stay mobile after the surgery. Get up and move around each hour during the day. When sitting with your leg elevated, do some simple stretches. Example: point your toes and hold for 20 seconds, then bring your toes back towards you and hold for another 20 seconds. Simple exercises like this will keep you circulation flowing and also help your muscles stay active.
What did your doctor advise?

Hope you feel better soon

Me too! It's a bit scary -1 hope your on blood clot busters and that( unlike me) they haven't thrown off clots in your lungs?- three months on I have begun to look forwards from this complication and feeling less breathless and short of Oxygen
Good luck!

I too had a blood clot that went into my lungs (2 weeks ago). I feel so breathless and very low energy but so desperate to get out and about again, after 3 months have you more energy and managing to do more ?

I really empathise- it's terrifying and there seems to be little acknowledgement about how ill and grotty you feel. I had 4 /5 lung segments affected. I was very short of breath for weeks.and felt very vulnerable. BUT the good news is that three months on I am no longer short of breath and beginning to revive- I had other problems with a spondikyrhesis but I think the pe's really have slowed my recovery
You will get there please keep me in touch with how you do
Sue

Thank you Sue, not sure how much of my lungs were affected they just said it was both of them. So glad you are feeling better makes me realise that I will in time fel 'normal' again.
And I will keep in touch as it's good to know that we are not alone

Pauline,
Sorry to hear what you are going through. I hope you feel better very soon
I did a little research and while there aren't accurate numbers, clinical studies that have been done show that blood clots after a knee surgery occurs in about 1 to every 100 patients. Hip surgery occurs in about 1 to every 200 patients. People who are smokers, less active and/or over weight carry the highest probability. I realize now why my surgeon refuses to operate on anyone if there is nicotine in the blood. Blood thinners are usually given if your surgeon feels that the risk is high. Unfortunately, this doesn't always prevent the clots from occuring. It does seem to minimize the occurance though. After the patient leaves the hospital, it is very important to get up move around often.
