I'm waiting to hear about my date I have all equipment fitted and delivered I'm still in to minds if I want it done as I'm very worried I have a few things playing on my mind so any advice would be grate
1) how long till you could have a bath as I've been told 3 months
Also not allowed to get into shower as it's in bath only allowed to go in walk in shower can any body tell me what they did pls
2) do you have to rest up for first week or two or is it best to keep self
Motivated and walking
3) how long till you could put your own socks and shoes on
4) I'm confused with the 90 degrees thing they have told me I've got to sit up with feet flat on floor knee above hip dose that mean your not allowed to put leg up at all on stool or foot rest I know in bed it's to be rested on a pillow finding it all mind blowing
5) how long did you use toilet aids and raises for
thanks in advance for looking and any advice appreciated xx

Hi like you I have worries I have a bath chair cannot use it and a step up to shower cannot use they fitted two raised loo seats they are a got send and the bed rail really helpful before the surgery so I think will be useful after.i am confused think wait and see what they say after as all say different things. I have been using the raised loo seats for a couple of years and still will so not to strain new hip it's got to last!

Hi Karen
I'm at three months and will now have a bath.
My husband installed grab bars. I practiced going into the tub good leg first and bring in op leg with twisting. The leg was extended behind me and bent at the knee. Worked like a charm. Husband stood beside me. Helped with everything I clouding drying off the legs.
I was out of bed and moving the next day and always kept moving every day thereafter. Did exercises and began to tide stationary bike one month post surgery. Started at 2 minutes and now at 30
With aids own socks from second day. Own shoes from day 2
90 degree is probably easier to explain in person. Caregivers/physio could show you.
Used toilet seat up to 2 months or so. I was given no restrictions after 6 weeks
Good luck

Hi Karen
I understand your concerns, I was unsure as to whether to get it done too but realised I couldn't go on the way I was, I won't lie I was absolutely petrified, bursting into tears all the time and getting angry at everyone close to me. I'm 2 weeks post surgery and whilst it is hard the pain I had prior to the operation is gone, the only pain I have now is from the operation itself. I am still using my sticks but every day my leg is getting slightly stronger.
1. I was told 3 months to have a bath too unfortunately I'm not sure how to cope with that as I have a walk in shower but not showering for 2 weeks was bad enough, perhaps ask the hospital team about that, there must be a way round it.
2. I was up in hospital on day 2 and the physio gave me exercises to do, released on the third day after my op I certainly didn't go mad in the first week but I did walk around the house a bit each day and continued with the very few exercises I was given, the first week was hard a day it is certainly easier in the 2nd/3rd week but I'm by no means better yet, as people keep telling me I've had major surgery!
3. I was given a "hip kit" when I left hospital which had a grabber, long shoe horn and a sock aid in which does help but I haven't put socks on without it yet.
4. I have found that putting my leg up on the sofa is more comfortable than sitting with my legs down I just make sure I'm slightly laying back.
5. I haven't got any toilet aides etc on account of being so short!
Sorry I can't help with all of your questions but I hope I've helped a little!
I'm finding the broken sleep the hardest but I've come this far I'm sure it will get better.
Only you can decide whether to have it done or not but I've yet to meet anyone who said they wish they hadn't!
Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
Karen xx

I’m speaking as someone who twenty years had a total hip replacement and from day one it has been brilliant. Yes I was terrified not helped by my ex wife who was in nursing saying that there were no guarantees of successful... Fantastic support!!
Well I knew that there really was no alternative if I wanted to get my life back so please Karen if your surgeon says you need this surgery just accept it and try to be positive. It is important to not allow negative thoughts to take hold. I will leave it to others to address your other concerns.
Best wishes
Richard

Follow your docs advice after surgery they get you up and walking right after surgery and PT teaches you how to get thru the first few weeks with walker and cane. Be sure to purchase all the aides needed and this will go by soon. There's many PT utube to watch and on this site answers all your questions search THR recovery.
so much great advice from all us hippies.
I am 10 weeks from threvision doing great and driving.
You asked some some very good questions that have to be addressed with the nurse and most will have hip classes at hospitals or print out for more info.
Many healing blessings sent your way!

As I'm soon - hopefully going in for hip revision surgery I'm interested in hearing what your experience has been and what exactly was done.
My twenty year old replacement hip gave up on me a couple of weeks ago and I'm having the first meeting with my surgeon next Monday!
Cheers Richard

I had THR in my late 40's & it's still going well. Will need a new poly cup soon from wear& tear. As the cup replaces the lost tissue which origionally causes the joint to become bone on bone, called osteoarthritis. All the other implant components are intact according to recent MRI. It also has three screws and a bone graft for almost 19 years of working, skiing, horseback riding hiking & gardening.
What implant components need revision in your case? Any loose components? I assume you had MRI. What doest it show ? Any tissue damage ? Once the Explant is removed a newer longer femur implant is the replacement. Ask your doc what manufacturers and look up revision components on internet.
After revision I asked for the OP report notes and was a very interesting read for my revision I had taken the time to understand the process doing research before the doc did the surgery. I had plenty of questions to be sure I was comfortable with the surgeon, procedure, & manufacturer. Was done at a major university teaching hospital in US.
The surgeon went in the posterior approach the same incision as the previous primary surgery. A special negative pressure dressing was used for faster healing called a PICO negative dressing. Designed to also prevent infection . This was on the second hip that was recalled 5 years ago 2012.
byJan 2017 had revision replacing recalled components, the femur component neck, and metal ball replaced with ceramic, &
went straight from hospital to rehab for 10 days . Walking with cane after 7 days PT.keep on pain meds to control pain for rehab and I actually believe that going straight to rehab after surgery is why I have recovered better than primary surgery due to rehab every day before going home. Never let the muscles or tendons weaken. Resting also is a good part of rehab .
Now home still a bit unstable but doing well working on balance getting better every day. Just very tired as the body needs lots of calories 2200 per day for recovery. Boost protein shakes are my best friends for energy at this point.
As far as implant manufacturers each THR doc has many available sizes and components available to best fit a patient during surgery components are selected as the OR ROOM is loaded with parts of every size and possible to best fit the patient. Like going into a hardware store literally. LOL
See utube for more info on THR REVISION, and aides available and do a search on this site for more information.
I could write a book. So will stop here and refer you to U.K. info search on THR revision its a good choice to read as much as possible and be your own advocate.
Keep positive be a fighter and stay strong your revision will be stronger than ever!
HOPE XXXXX👍

Thanks for the additional information. I've now got the hospital report in front of me but feel sure I will have much clearer information next Monday when I've seen the specialist.
This is what the hospital report said after release from A and E three weeks ago. Hip replacement acetabular inset wear. The X rays showed migration of the femoral head which suggests acetabular insert wear.
I hope this means something to you!
Cheers Richard

Bless your heart - I'm having mine May 15 and terrified wirh all the same questions as you!
What approach are you having? There are so many wonderful people on this forum that bring me confidence to keep moving on with this decision and not chicken out.
Good luck & hope to continue posting when both of us have this behind us and compare notes!

First of all l had all the same concerns as you. I had my 1st hip replacement in dec 2015 at 42 years old due to Ostioarthritis.
They provided me with the toilet raiser and a bath board as l to havean shower in the bath and it makes it a lot easier to have a shower.
I was allowed a shower 3 days after my hip replacement in the hospital as l had no stiches if there were they were inside my wound was glued together and l had a waterproof dressing on it. If which they supplied me with more to change every couple of days or if the other became wet. I think l wated until my dressing was off and l was healing up before l had a bath which was about a month or 2. But could shower when l liked. I used the raised toilet seats for as long as l.needed them. But l was getting my other hip done so just left them on. I had my 2nd hip replacement 8 weeks after my first as l was doing so good and walking unaided.
The physio will explain the 99 degree angle.
Please dont be scared its the best thing l have had done and recovered really well. I cant even feel that they are replacemment hips.
You will be fine. Everything will come to you on how to cope. I promise.
Good luck
Laura

Hi Karen,
It is a very worrying time and it's hard to concentrate on anything, I was the same but once it's done, you will be fine.recovery initially is slow the first 2 weeks is the hardest and then with each day it gets a little bit better, because it is a major operation, the leg does take quite some time to heal for a number of reasons, muscles nerves etc.at 3 weeks I felt a bit of a breakthrough and someone mentioned on here this happens also at around 9 and 12 weeks,I'm 4 weeks post op 49 years. Make sure you take your pain killers, this will help mobility,do the physio exercises.start to mobilise around the house following discharge but also rest as well this aids recovery. I now so an outside walk very short along a quarter of the street,I was informed this helps.makw sure you eat and drink well as this aids recovery, ice packs are great too. I'm not sure where you are I'm in England but the occupational therapist came our with the equipment, my shower wasn't a problem but I would ask them if they have any further aids for the bath,or contact a mobility shop? The toilet raiser has been a God send, apparently when you go to your post op appointment with consultant, they advise you if you can lift the restrictions, it seems from what I have read, this happens around 6-8 weeks.i can't put socks on yet or Ted stockings, which is frustrating, not sure how long this will be but I can take them off. I purchased a very small footstool and a little table which has helped when sitting in the chair that was given to me.
Hope this helps. I promise you will feel better once it's done just take things slowly slowly
Nicky
