Hip operation number 4 after 2 dislocations 😞

Back in July I underwent my 2nd hip revision to hopefully get rid of the problems I was experiencing including pain, all was well for 2 months then came the 1st dislocation. I was only sitting on the chair but had been feeling it popping in and out of socket on a number of occasions the previous day when it dislocated. After being took to a local emergency hospital to have it manipulated back under general anaesthetic which didn't happen for 32 hours (yes 32). I got refered to my surgeon who explained why it had happened ( all due to removal of muscles after reaction to previous metal implants) I was fine. The sublaxing (popping in and out) did continue and 5weeks later again sitting on chain it dislocated again....same procedure, ambulance, general anaesthetic etc but I requested immediate transfer to my surgeon which finally happened at midnight of the 27/10/14. I woke up and was shortly greeted by an anesthetist saying he would be dealing with me during my surgery, I didn't expect that one then my surgeon who did the previous operation came to explain they were changing the cup liner and ball for larger components to help prevent the dislocation all was good. I came home on 3/11/14 but still had lots of bleeding and excess fluid coming out ( they didn't put a drain in this time ) it is now the 9/11/14 and it's still pouring. I've been back to see tissue viability etc, district nurses attending as the blood and fluid usually bursts all the dressings every day or so. The hospital said to try to keep overlapping new dressings as it starts to leak or show but eventually they just burst. They said its a heamotoma and just needs to get out. I'm now waiting for blood test results checking for infection as it was a little red, hot and slightly swollen around the staples area. I also feel extremely sick and it's really sore time also started getting some pain back in the joint and going through my back but that seems higher up the waist line rather than in the groin and thigh like I was getting before the July op. The staples are due out on Tuesday but the district nurse said she is expecting it to split open again. My emotions are completely shot and that's not like me at all. Obviously any advice is great but wanted to share. Oh didn't mention my leg is now a little longer but he said the larger ball etc is the reason for that.

im 43 years old in uk.

Crickey! Don't know what to say, poor you, sounds awful. How can they let that happen, and you are so young.

I think you should post who your surgeon is in this website so that we can avoid him!

So sorry hope you recover in some time to come, try to get counselling from your doctor so that you can speak about it to someone to get it off your chest.

So sorry you have had such a terrible time.  I had a revision in September, thankfuly without any complications.  I don't know about all the other things that are happening to you but the back or pelvic pain you are experiencing could be from the bigger cup liner and ball which the surgeon has put in.  It will take a while for your body to adjust to it.  I had a bigger cup liner and ball too and it felt really weird to begin with and I had terrible back and pelvic pain.  After 9 weeks it is now feeling much more normal.  I hope you can get some counselling and other medical support and wish you all the best.

Stella I'm so glad you have said that I was beginning to think something was wrong as I've not experienced that pain in any of the other 3 ops prior to this one....thanks for the support 😊

Wow sorry to hear your story. That is what they usually say because the ball is bigger that's why it's little lon get than the other leg. It's a cop out with these surgeons that always mess up. I would accept that at all. That's why you have lawyers to protect your rights. Take advantage of that pursue it.

How terrible, terrible.  You mentioned you had a reaction to metal - was the original metal on metal.  If tissue was removed to that degree, goodness knows the damage the metal had done.  If I were you (when you are better as now you are clearly under duress and distress) I'd get notes and xray copies and any scans;  you are entitled.

If the area is hot, it could be infected;  that amount of liquid is surely not normal;  are you on blood thinners by any chance.  I am surprised you are not on intravenous antibiotics and vitamin K or pro thrombin whichever appropriate.  What is sure, there is so much inflammation.  Youve got to start upping the ante.  Call the NHS emergency weekend number so it gets registered.  IF the District nurse is expecting wound to not be closed, that is a red warning for one thing.  Mention to your GP on the emergency line that you want a copy of your HOSPITAL notes.  Where was the surgery done?  Like you my second one has to be done after pain made worse after getting the one done!  But they may have not been up front about the amount of metal poisoning;  how bad do things have to be to have to cut away so much tissue.  I think you need to getting more vociferous. Mention the British Medical Council to your GP and tell them you are dissatisfied and very very worried about the state of your recovery (it doesn't sound as if recovery is the right word, more like your charcuterie).  Hope you have lots of support.  There is always the PALS  (patient liaison service in hospitals;  they will close ranks on you, have no fear of that, but it'll give em a kick start...)...  Most patients in the UK are powerless as you probablysigned an indemnity, but that doesn't stop you from naming, shaming etc.  How casually they informed you and then it wasn't half the story......  I can only feel devastated for you.  At the weekend there is nothing anyone can do, unless you feel inclined to call the ambulance, when there will only be a junior in the A&E and no beds.  Have you had an MRSA test?  We are all statistics.............

Thanks Gentilleschi. I had already decided as soon as I feel better I'm getting copies of everything and will certainly have it scrutinised by a professional not for any gain to me but if it will put the cat amongst the pigeons and make people sit up and look it might aid someone in the future. Thanks for the support

Oh my I'm so sad you have been through. I can't  imagine having all that surgery not alone the dislocations.

Now bleeding. I don't understand why.unless your on anticoagulants. Then you need them to check what level you are so to control blistering versus clotting.too much of anticoagulant can cause bleeding like you describe.

Can you ck with the doctor about anticoagulants.

I pray healing will come soon.

Let me try again to send you a note.

I really feel for all your pain and suffering.

Now are you on anticoagulants? You usually get those rt.after surgery for a period of time to prevent blood clots.

But if you get too much you can bleed.Do you get your levels done frequently? Can you ck.with your doctor.because y you sound like your bleeding a lot

I pray healing will come soon.

      Hi ginger

yes im on  celaxine ( injection into the stomach once a day) I have already questioned it twice it has been reduced but they seem to think that's fine now. As for my blood levels they again said everything is ok, I'm now waiting for the hospital to call me today about blood test results. I think if it shows no infection then that will be my first step in the right direction because bothe the tissue viability and district nurse are saying it's looking a little red, swollen and hot plus yesterday the district nurse said it didn't look as good as the day before 😔

      thanks for the support

      Hi,

I've just read your post and thought I'd tell you mine.

Following my THR my wound wept for over 6 weeks, I was discharged from hospital like that with tablets (sorry can't remember the name) to take every day to stop clots.

The nurse at the health centre dressed my wound daily saying it was okay, eventually I went back to the surgeon who squeezed around my wound till a huge amount of bloody liquid came out. He said it was a something? (bubble inside the wound) and that it would eventually heal now that he had opened it.

It still took a couple of weeks to finally heal over and now I am left with constant severe pain.

I've had blood tests, xrays, aspiration of the hip, metal allergy testing, all have come back clear, now I am waiting for the result of an MRI to see if I have nerve damage.

I am now 18 months post THR and have lived daily with this pain.

Please keep on at your medical people, don't wait like I did hoping the surgeon was right, now this summer I asked for another opinion hence the MRI. I should get the results this week.

      Hi Jaive

Thanks for sharing as this sounds a very similar situation to mine in terms of the leakage the only difference is I get the leaking for a day or two then that huge amount out of the blue on its own. I will keep pushing these about this as psychologically it isn't doing me any good let alone the physical aspects.

As for you I hope the second opinion helps and you eventually get free from the prison of pain.

      thanks again 👍
