Hi he has been in touch and the op is scheduled for the 1st April, I have a question, I fly to Chicago on the 9th June which so only 9 weeks after the op, dies anyone know if I will be ok for then, I am due to take my grandchildren to Florida from Chicago, it's all booked do you think I will be fit enough or should I have the op after my trip??

My surgeon does not allow any flight for first 12 weeks because of the possibility of Deep Vein Thrombosis...the longer the flight the greater the risk...I doubt you would get travel insurance so soon afterwards and you have to declare any recent surgery....unless anyone knows anything different ...I'm still self injecting Fragmin and have daily for 28 days ...this also has to be declared ( you have to carry a card in case of an accident as its a blood thinner)

Hope this helps but its about understanding and managing the risks in the end!! Have to wear flight socks for 12 months afterwards if flying too!!

Hi just spoken to surgeon he said it should be fine as long as there are no complications, but don't want to risk it so think I will have it done after I have been, how soon after the flight can I have it? Thanks

As soon as you can psyche yourself up for it I guess!! Enjoy your trip and keep thinking how much better you'll be for your next trip!! At least if its in summer you'll be able to sit outside with your leg up!!

Keep posting when its happening and post op......

Wow! Stumbled on this site and can't believe how similar. I am a 52 year old living in France who has been diagnosed with arthritis of hip and back. Left hip is worse than the right and today I have been told that I have to have it replaced, so surgery is booked for the end of April. Basically I am TERRIFIED! But currently in pain all the time and it interferes with sleep, I limp, can't ride my bike or horse anymore, can't walk my dog etc etc.

Would love to hear some happy success stories telling me I will soon be skipping and jumping and walking my dog again, and not destined to permanently use a raised toilet seat!

wow, this is great, I have asked them to do my hip in July it was booked for 1st April but I am flying to Chicago 8 weeks later and thought that was too soon just in case something goes wrong.

were are you booked into? I am going to clinic Tonkin in Lyon which is a four hour drive away, I just want to get back to walking the dog (cocker) and skiing.

let me know how you get on...keep in touch, this is great, don't feel so much alone, the cost I was quoted was 7500e what was your. it's a good job I have CV and top up.

Hi pjayne ( jayne i presume). this forum is great for info....look at other threads as well if you search under different things....

I had my right hip replaced 3 weeks ago and I'm really fine...just take all the pain relief you need and take things slowly...i cant weight bear for 6 weeks as there was a slight complication during surgery but it doesnt seem to have made much difference...already 90% more movement than before and sleeping most of the night..

and I'm off the raised toilet seat although I do have a frame thing for a bit of leverage!!

Anything you want to ask...go ahead.....

I am so glad I found this site - already feeling better about it.

I am in Normandy - and have lived and worked in France for 9 years, so it is all covered by my carte vitale too plus top up insurance (nice single room). I think I only have to pay for some cushions and a toilet seat, but not really sure yet, all a bit much seeing as this morning I didn't even know I definitely needed a replacement. I do know I have to go to see a heart specialist, my dentist and the anaesthetist as well as have a blood test a couple of weeks before. They have given me a sheet of preparations which I need to go through and a form to sign for consent to do it.

I dream of pain free walking and losing some weight - put on so much since been immobile and fed up!

I would recommend trying to lose some weight before your op...I lost 2 stone and could have done with losing more really....its so much easier with a hit less weight on your crutches!!

I've definitely put some back on since coming home too...visitors bringing chocolate and a partner who thinks I need my strength building up....back on a diet soon I think!!!

I had the blood and urine tests plus ECG the week before and everything ok...a full MOT!,
