Hello, i had a total hip replacement 3 Years ago at the age of 21. Everything was ok for a while a had a pain free life i even gave  birth  to my son - and didnt have complications at all. Over a month ago ive started job in royal mail distribution centre and this job involves lifting objects up to 12kg, also i have to load the lorries which involves walking for 8 hours and pulling and pushing heavy yorks up to 250 kg, at the end of my shift i struggle to walk and the only thing i need to is to lay down, and i feel that my hip is in pain. Im doing 30 hours a week , and i find that my hip dont have enough time to recover well after the night at work and my hip hurts quiet often :-( I really need your advice do you think im putting my hip in too much risk ? Im so worried because im only 24 Years old and i know that i will need to have more op :-( Please advice me what should i do...

Hi Angel it sounds like you are working quite hard with fairly long days on your feet and carrying some weight as well, are you only getting pain on op side or both.

Was your replacement because of accident or genetic disease as you were very young, congrats on your baby as well

      Thank you for replying ;-)

It is only on the op side,

Well I had an accident when I was 11 years old and back then I had 3 operations to fix it , it was ok untill the age of 18-19 then I started to be in more pain every day. And then I wasn't able to to day to day activities without being in pain then I decided to go to doctors and he decided I need to have a total hip replacement.

Its young to be going down the road of hip replacements but it happens and now luckily they can last years, I would also suggest seeing your Dr and speaking to someone above you were you work, the Royal mail are good at moving you to a less arduous position if its backed by a DR's letter which I'm sure he would give you if you explain why and how its causing you mobility problems.

Also you could consider changing to a less demanding job that u can sit at.

Maybe contact one of your local supermarkets and explain you predicament and see if you can be considered for a job if money would be OK

Hi Angelika - Congratulations on your new baby firstly, and sorry to hear your hip is hurting you.

The way I always 'check' to see if any pain is caused by doing too much is simply to completely stop and see if your hip still hurts? When does it hurt and what are you doing at the time? I think you will quickly see if it is your job (which sounds incredibly demanding, I could not lift 12kg at any point in my life even at peak fitness!) Pulling and pushing for 8 hours repeatedly is also not especially good for you.

If you are feeling perfectly fine on a non working day I would question whether you should be doing that job at all - I know you may not be in a position to pick and choose, but you definitely won't be able to choose at all if you damage your hip and need to have further operations...

Having said all of that it may not the job and it may be a medical problem that would have happened anyway, without knowing how you are when you are resting/doing day to day activities it is hard to say.

Personally if it were me there is no way I would be doing such a physical demanding job, almost any job would be better than doing something that could damage you, mainly because at your age and the potential revisions you may need, you really need your hip to last as long as possible, this is more important than anything else I would say.

Could you speak to your line manager and see if there is something else you could do instead? They may be able to move you over to something that is much better for you - there may be other roles you can do instead?

Thank you for replying and giving  me the advice. I have already spoke with my manager but unfortunately they wont be able to put me off doing that job as this is one of the duties and everyone have to do it at least twice a week which is for 16 hours two days in a row and after this i can feel the pain in my hip for the next 2 days.     I do think that the job is putting my hip in too much risk but i would like to just Ask someone for opinion because I thought that maybe after doing  that job for the next month or so my hip will get use to it and I wont be in pain ? I will definitely make dr appointment just to make sure that i havent damage my hip already and what he thinks about my job. But i think it is time to look out for a new job. Thanks again.

Hi Angel! Welcome to the hip forum! Have you gone to see dr yet? It sounds like this job maybe a little too much. We have to be mindful of our artificial hips and take care of them. I know at times we feel good and we start to live life and forget about our hip. Do things that probably wouldn't hurt a real hip but hip replacements we need to be more careful. I think you should go to dr and see if anything is going on with the hip. Hopefully it's just going to be that you are doing too much. Take care and wishing you all the best!! Hugs, 🤗🤗. LD

I was 6 months post op when I was pregnant :-) I was worried at first that it was too early but I didn't have any problems at all.

Yes I will make an appointment today to see the dr. I went off sick yesterday because I was in so much pain I was resting all evening and had a good sleep at night but the pain is still here today ...

Hello Renee ;-) I am feeling much better today but unfortunately the pain is still here even without me being at work since Saturday as I was off sick for two days ...

I have contacted my doctor who did the operation and I did tell him everything, he did agree that it looks like I'm doing way too much at work ( he said that if it hurts while I'm doing anything then I should stop ) so that means I need to quit the job and find something else , therefore I'm coming back to work on Friday and I will have to speak to my manager and say to him that I am leaving. It was a hard decision but me and my fiancée both agreed that my health is much more important , and I can always find different job.

The doctor said that I should wait few more days and see if I still have the pain if yes then I will have to go and see him and have x ray done.

( as I did say to him that I also injured my hip at work , as I hit it quiet hard with a metal thing and it's now bruised )

Thank you everyone for all you support

      Have a lovely day x

Hi I personally think you should go and be examined at least or get an xray, you are in UK I think

Hello, yes im in the UK , so do you think i shouldnt wait any longer and just make an appointment straight away ?

I think you are worried, if so then at least it will put your mind at rest, or you could hang on a bit longer but pain is still there and if its not to hard to see GP and you can get there without too much effort and if its going to have a beneficial effect yes I do.

Worry is not good in fact its worse than the pain LOL

oh Angelika ... that must have been a hard decision ... but yes, your health is the most important thing - I am sure  that something great is coming your way ...

keep having faithnand know that everything is exactly as it's supposed to be ... if not, it would be diffferent ...
