Hip pain after L4 L5 S1 fusion surgery. It feels like electricity and it's completely debilitating

I had surgery when I was 14 years old on L4 L5 it corrected my extreme pain in my right leg however I still suffered from pain issues also due to three car accidents and an ex-boyfriend trying to run me over. So I had other issues however before my L4 L5 S1 Fusion surgery 2 weeks ago I have been experiencing hip pain that completely debilitates me when it happens I can't move I get stuck it feels like electricity it's very sharp and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? After my fusion surgery it's gotten way way worse to the point where I feel like my hips are just stuck. It's very hard to walk now because of it. Has anyone experienced this? I know my surgery was only 2 weeks ago but I know how it felt before the surgery and I know how bad it feels now and it just seems to be getting worse so I'm very concerned at this point?

    Dear Kasie,

I don’t know if my situation is the same as yours, of course. However, after years of back pain and every healing method possible I had TIFL minimally invasive fusion on L5/S1  eight weeks ago.

The doctor said I must have walked too much though I was very careful. I developed severe bursitis in my left hip joint and yes it’s a likely electricity. I say it’s like a blowtorch. And I can feel it coming on but once it comes I really can hardly walk and stay seated. I had a good day yesterday and did a little bit more and I must’ve set it off again because I’ve had to stay in bed all day today. I mean every half an hour trying to move a little of course but you understand. Anyway best of luck to you and I’m sorry I don’t have anything to suggest but I wanted to reply  so at least you know you’re not alone.

    To Pumpkin too

    What does “electricity” mean?

I had l5 s1 fusion done with a cage (metal filler between disc) with screws in the vertebrae, about 8 weeks ago. My low back feels great & ive lost weight too!

I have had chronic pain in my si joint for about 12.5 years since I had my son. It got very bad during my second pregnancy 10 years ago. Between that & the l5 s1 pain, my butt, hips, legs hurt so much. I can lay down or stand. Which after awhile standing causes everything to cramp up in my si joint area.

I am thinking of calling my pain to do an epidural there. I’ve had one before for si joint. However googling the si joint dysfunction online, it looks as though surgery might be the only way. I’ve been in so much pain since having 2 kids I’m just over it! I want to healthy & active but I’m bedridden.

Anyway I wanted to respond to both of you...you’re not alone. My butt hurts too ;(

Yes I also had fusion L4L5S1 and recently I have started getting the same problems. My hip gets stuck and I literally can't move, the pain is excruciating. I did get mri and bone scan and it shows that there are now problems with my hips. I am only 41 and I blame the fusion. I haven't been pain free in 4 years and as time goes on it all seems to be getting worse. I can't get anyone to take metalwork out as pain specialist thinks this is causing me more problems. I have to agree but this problem with my hips now is horrendous.

I spoke to my surgeon & she thinks that I might have to have my SI joint stabilized. The surgery does not seem that invasive. It’s a long screw That goes through one of your hips. This pain for me is old but it’s been giving me more issues. I’m 36 & hoping to be pain free & get stronger. It’s so important to me. I have 2 very active healthy kids. I’m so thankful for them everyday. They help me around the house & are very supportive.

I thought it was my si joints too and was going to get left one fused but then 2 wks ago got mri of hips and si joint and pelvis seperately and bone scan and it showed it was my hips and not si joint at all.... needless to say not going ahead with si but was shocked and annoyed doc's presumed si all this time.. problem with hips is also down to fusion and pressure... am glad I got tests done now. I always thought when I got mri of lower back it included si and hips but apparently not..
