Slipped on ice and broke my hip Very severe break severing ball completely from socketSurgery putting long rod in and lots of screws.Coming up on 2 years and my gait and hip have gotten worse. Went back to surgeon several times and he just kept saying it would get betterFinally went to another ortho surgeon and he told me the muscles never attached back to bone properly and there is nothing that can be done. i cannot walk very far without assistance (cane) and my hip is swollen most of the time. I have gone to PT faithfully with no help for walking or pain. I am a type I Diabetic but i was very active before this big messAny suggestions would be appreciated.Jeanne

I am curious why the pin and rods were chosen over hip replacement. Are you in the United States? I fell and broke my hip, was extremely active for my age (64), and had a total hip replacement. I pleaded with the doctors to do the pin and rods; however, they advised against this for several reasons. After the THR almost two years ago, I have done very well. Now I barely notice I have had a replacement. I feel thankful that the very good doctors convinced me that the risk of complications was too great to consider repairing the break with pin and rods. Would you now be able to have a THR?

Where in the US are you? I would think it would be possible to seek a THR. That might be your best bet.I am puzzled why the doctor didn't recommend a THR over the repair they did. Did they even consider a THR? The doctors told me that if I opted for the pin/rods that complications might cause me to have to get a THR eventually anyway. I hope you can find a good doctor to get a second opinion and hopefully find a solution.

I WAS TOLD THE MUSCLES NEVER ATTACHED TO THE BONE AFTER THE SURGERY,I WAS HOPING TO FIND SOMEONE WITH SAME ISSUE.AFTER COMMENTS BY SEVERAL POSTS I HAVE CONTACTED SURGEON AT U OF M AND ASKED THE QUESTION OF HIP REPLACEMENT. SO FRUSTRATED AND WISHING A MAGIC WAND COULD FIX IT. VERY APPRECIATIVE OF RESPONSE FROM THOSE WHO HAVE HAD ISSUES. MAYBE MAYO IS THE BEST OPTION AT THIS TIME.ABOUT TWO HOURS AWAY. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
