I have had PMR for the past 3and a half yrs. I have been told that one of my hips has osteo arthritis, and is bone on bone, so, needs replacing. ( the pain is awful)has anyone experienced having to have a hip replacement as a result of having PMR please.

My other hip is completely normal.

First of all - it is unlikely that the PMR caused the need for the hip replacement. These things happen anyway and - as I keep saying - having PMR doesn't excuse us from having the normal events of getting older! To be fair - the bad walking in PMR might have accelerated the damage to the cartilage.

Two ladies (formerly participants here but now on another forum) have had hip replacements done while still on pred for PMR. One was told by her GP she wouldn't be considered for a hip op as she was far too young - which was patently rubbish! If you need it you need it. One surgeon told her she would need to be off pred - she was struggling to reduce to 10mg at the time - but another was happy to operate as long as she was stable on her current dose which by the time she was operated on was 10mg. There is no point getting a patient with PMR off pred just to operate - they won't be able to mobilise post-op which is absolutely essential. The other lady was on less that 10mg as I remember - and sailed through the op at over 80! So shop around if you meet any "won't do it until you are off pred" comments. One was at Addenbookes and the other in Norwich as I remember (might be wrong).

Both of them were subsequently able to reduce their pred steadily and both have been off pred for a year or so - it was almost as if the PMR had been aggravated by the hip pain.

Hi alanh, this time I am writing for the third time I have written 2 other posts that were long and then something like a target add comes up and my message is gone. Back arrow doesn" t help. Anyway l have had both hips replaced and with pred. Ask for pain meds. The surgical pain was nothing compared to what I had before . 4 weeks after surgery no pain meds needed. Ask any questions you want I will be happy to answer. So sorry you are having to go through this. Pat

Alanh, my replacements were caused by prednisone. I had avascular necrosis caused by consumption of alcohol(large) or prednisone. Had been in pred approx obe year due to PMR. Pat
