Hip replacement

Am booked to have a right THR on Wednesday but am terrified. I feel sick when I think about getting to the hospital and walking down to the theatre. Think I will be fine once I have the op but am so scared that I won't get there. Any help on managing the fear?

I had mine done six months ago and I know exactly where you are with this. Sometimes you can ask the hospital for a small oral pill to calm you down, but you will be accompanied by someone who will understand how you are feeling. After all, they see this all the time and there can't be anyone who isn't anxious and frightened when going to the OR. But once there, it will be a case of lay on the table, feel a scratch in the back of your hand and next thing, you have a new hip. Simple as that.

I had mine done Dec 5...woz similarly trepidated. Went into anaesthetic room. Epidural didn't bother me, was expecting it to...something else went into back of hand...reminded nurse I wanted C-O-W-A-R-D on top of my notes, then I asked her if I was seeing a film of my op...she said no, it's 2 hrs later & it's all over...knew abso zilch about it, dozed off...roused in recovery, briefly. Then I was on the Ward...that's 9am till after 2pm a blank. BUT recup/rehab has been harder & slower than I'd expected...but I need both doing! That was Hip1!

All done now and just as you said nothing to

Worry about. Knew nothing from the anaesthetic room

Until I woke up in recovery. Am now 3 weeks post op and

    Making reasonable recovery I think.

It's so good to hear you say that all went well with your op even though you were apprehensive. I think that I will need 2 new hips fairly soon and although I've had a mastectomy and a spinal fusion in the last 5 years the hip replacement op is really freaking me out!!

Hi, don't let the fear bind you of your healing. Just determine in your heart that 'nobody can stop me from getting my healing'. Not even fear. Go like a lion and complete the things need to complete. Just do it.

I am a 70yo female and had left THR last Thurs (7th Feb). Had a spinal and sedation which means I don't remember much about it. First day postop wasn't very pleasant, felt a bit sick and dizzy when got out of bed to loo and later for check xray. Started physio on Sat and came home on Sunday, less than 72h after the op. Only problem is I've started a bad cold which is making me feel a bit miserable but am getting around flat on 2 sticks and doing my exercises. Find getting in and out of bed a bit difficult but have just tried a large plastic bag to slide on which helps. Also shoulders are sore from having to take abnormal strain from sticks and moving on and off bed. But so far so good and am managing just on paracetamol so far today. Will need other hip done, surgeon talking about 3 months time but don't know if I'll be ready by then.

I understand this is a very though time for you but still you have time. Surely you can do that surgery. Hope for best.

I need both hips doing, had first one done on December 5th. Didn't leave the bed for 2 days and had 3 goes over three days to stand up and move around. Was in hospital for nine days. I'm still walking aided by crutches... Going to see the surgeon about the first hip in a fortnight. Hope to go into the pre-op for second hip on March 7. I don't and wouldn't expect too much too soon... My ambition is to be 100% right by June or July.

    Hope this helps

I had a right THR last Oct. To say I was terrified as I never had an operation before and had many dire warning about my weight over the years. I put it off as long as I could until I could barely walk and went totally sideways when I did , Two things made a difference, A good friend dragged me kicking and screaming to a local gym, upper body weights and 'jogging'' in the warm pool made a difference to my recovery.Another good friend brought me to the hospital and walked me to the theatre, waited outside until they said I was out and waited until I came around. I didn't believe people when they said you would have NO pain after, but its true, Being able to sleep without being woken when I moved, bliss. The care I received in a public hospital was excellent . Eight months on , I'm a new woman, 40kg less, out walking, cycling and going to the gym. I know the left one has to be done but hand on heart, i have no worries about that. Good luck to anybody hesitating, go to the gym first, or a pool with a level floor and warm water, you might be the biggest crock in the place but its worth it. just keep saying to yourself,'' at least I'm here''
