Hi there, pleased to hear all is going well for you.  I had LTHR on 17 August so roughly four weeks ahead of your op.  I too have swelling just above and around the knee and it gets quite sore towards the end of the day but I've also been reassured that this will settle over time.  In the meantime, I've taken advice from a fellow hippie and returned to some basic exercises to strengthen glutes as this will help.  I also use ice in the evening which helps to reduce swelling.

    Hope your progress continues.

Hi Quail, you're a we ahead of me. I had my op on September 17 and am like you. No crutches inside but I like the security of them when I go out.

My goal at the moment is to learn to walk without a limp. It's quite difficult and I'm doing exercises to build up my butt muscles. I have a bad cold at the moment though and all my muscles have become really weak so I'm not walking at all well.

Hi, I too had left THP on 11 September and walking unaided indoors but using one when out.  I am driving, since week 7, but only short distances until I feel more comfortable with muscles at top of leg.  I did knee down yesterday I really felt tightness and pressure in knee, not elegant getting up!  I'm wondering when to ditch the crutch outside.....have ordered Nordic grip boots to give me more confidence when wet and cold outdoors....having last physio next week so I will ask about walking unaided.  All good and so pleased that I am pain free as I think I didn't realise how much it affected me emotionally as well as physically.

    Hello quail,

Welcome to our loving family of Hippies - I am 9 weeks post-op of 2nd THR  -

IS the swelling just there or at the end of the day? your body is healing fro this major surgery -

Good for you that you decided not to drive yet - last surgery was on left hip too and I need that leg to use the clutch as well - I did drive though but nah ... not so confident if I can do an emergency stop -

be gentle with your self -

    big warm hug

    Hi quail

We must be about level. I had THR on 17 September but was told to be non weight bearing for first two weeks because of a bone graft and a crack in the femur caused by a previous broken femur.

I am still on one crutch and no sign of getting rid of it yet. I can hobble a bit indoors without it but walk like a penguin. confused

Fortunately it is my right leg so I am able to drive now a bit. Only short lcal journeys though. Just started going to my local  swimming baths, not to swim yet but to do some exercises in the jacuzzi. Bliss!

Keep us posted as I am interested to hear about your progress.

    Hugs

my hip was very abnormal so involved a lot of work, the exercises given are very important so i still do them. everybody heals different so you have to just go with your own body and be careful. don't rush things.

Hi fellow hip hopper. Good to see you are able to walk unaided at home. How soon after we're you able to walk unaided. I had mine on the 22 Oct 3weeks ago today and can walk short distances without a crutch but it feels really stiff and weak. Was you the same? Do you or anyone else following this know when one can legally or insurance wise be able to drive after the op. The info handout says 6 weeks but this seems a bit too long.

i was told six weeks but because of swelling of knee and ankle i don't want to risk driving as its my left leg and i don't have an automatic car.

thirteen years ago i had my right hip replacement and was able to drive after six weeks, everybody is different.  I think your body knows best but be careful don't rush things or things can go wrong and the damage can be serious
