Hip Replacement

Hi everyone I have noticed that quite a few of you have been told to sleep sitting up. Fortunatley I was told that I didn't have to so been sleeping flat on my back with a pillow between my legs and it works fine. Also, my stitches dissolve themselves does everyone have that too. 6 days post op no dressing on I cannot believe it.

Love Ann

Hi, I wasn't given any restrictions for sleeping.  I remember very clearly from the discomfort that I wouldn't be lying on the operated side for a while.  It didn't take my surgeon to tell me before I figured that one out...lol.

I had an incision approximately 5 inches long on the side of my hip which were dissolvable.

Staples. 5" incision. My surgeon said I could sleep any way I wanted. But obviously surgical side was too sore.

Hi. I haven't heard anyone say they were given instructions to sleep sitting up. Most were told sleep on back but so many find they can't get comfortable for mor than a few minutes on back SO they end up

Propping up or sleeping in recliner.

    Best wishes on your recovery.

I wasn't told to sleep sitting up, but found it useful for a short period.

I was told to sleep on my back for 6 weeks (both after the operation, and after my revision 10 weeks later) cry.

I didn't like being on my back, but sitting up did help.  Now a year later however, I still cannot sleep on my sides for very long, so I have become a back sleeper.

I had staples, both times, no problems with them.

      Hi Rocketman

Yes the same with me ,told to sleep on my back ,but just couldn't fall asleep so ended up propping myself up with a v pillow and sleep well.

I am now 14 post op and know I wouldn't be able to sleep on my side even now as when I get out of bed if I roll slightly that side it's feels like I am lying on metal ,which I suppose I am ( ha ha) can't imagine I ever will feel comfortable enough to sleep on my side again.

i had staples too on my 10 inch cut ,surprised disposables are strong enough.

Was your V pillow actually shaped

Like the V letter? Did you have to order it. If they really help I may order one. Did you use it behind your back to support back and arms?

      Thanks

      Hi Cheril

yes like letter V . I live in the uk and bought it from Argos many years ago . Yes props me up and supports shoulders and tops of my arms.

Put an ordinary pillow behind it.

Have 2 , use the other flat on my lap whilst in my rise and  recline chair

lit makes a perfect table .

      Highly recomend Cheril

Thanks.I'm going to look on Amazon and see what I can find for V pillows. I am so restless

With my sleep, turning from side to side all night. Hope this will help.

My PT recommended putting a flat gel coldpack pad under the hip area so that a little cold permeated into the area of pain.I tried that as well as You tubing sleep meditations for pain and the combination really worked . I'm not even having to take Tylenol at night.Im 3 weeks out today and feeling much better .

Hi Ann! Wow! Impressing recovery! What method did your doctor use? I had traditional surgery and thick wire stitches in for a month before removal. I recovered well, but slowly. I also slept only on my back with pillows under my operated leg and between my legs too. I guess there are so many different techniques that recovery times vary. It's ok though 😊. Do I walk normally now after my THR?? Yes! Do I need pain medications anymore? NO! So all's well! Take care! Enjoy your new hip.🙆 👍 😊

Hi, slept on my back for 6 weeks. Nice dissolving stitches, and a very neat scar! Glad you are doing well.

Dissolving stitches and could sleep on my side as long as I used the pillow I had to prevent ankles crossing in my sleep.

Me too Beth, I had anterior and was told sleeping on side ok as long as I used a pillow between my legs to stop them crossing over. It worked great for me. No pain meds after 3 weeks and now at 12 weeks, other than a little tingling feeling when lying on my non op side to go to sleep, I already forget I have had it. Amazing! I have the other side to do still, do you? I am a bit scared because I know the routine now......
